Intro level class, so there was some hand-holding but I thought Rael did a good job. He knows his material well and makes lectures somewhat entertaining at times. Very fair grader, but not easy. Do the reading and prepare for the quizzes and you'll be fine.

Knowledgeable for sure, but lectures with an agenda. Quizzes and exams are focused on specific facts (names, dates, locations) rather than application of overarching concepts. Often feels very much like a high school, or even middle school course in terms of depth, analysis and concepts explored. Cannot recommend. Has chewed gum during lectures.

I am not sure how Rael could be critiqued; he is undoubtedly one of the most interesting professors I have ever encountered; his assignments are immensely clear and he is very helpful during office hours; any course you take with him will make you question your conceptions of history

Do not take his class. He is a very harsh grader. Deducts points arbitrarily without giving an explanation. I used to love US History, then I took this class.

Professor Rael is a very rigid man. He does not allow any room for error whatsoever, which is absolutely ridiculous and unflinchingly unhelpful. I missed 1 quiz and received a comment card form him CC'ed to my Dean. I tried to connect with him, but he was as cold as ice. Also, he did not prepare us for our tests well at all.

Rael is JAWESOME. Reads from his notes while lecturing, which bothered me a bit at first, but the stuff that comes out of his mouth is incredible. Easy to find outside of class, GIS project was a bit weird though. Also, he's hot.
