Super easy and fun class. He enjoys discussion and getting the class to talk more often than not. Grades very easily and gives easy tests. Respects his students and their opinions. Keep up with the materials even if you don't read. Do the weekly notecards for easy points. Book is discussed a lot.

Dr. Speelman is a great professor. Too bad most of his students are pathetic. If you know how to take notes at a college level, getting an A should be a breeze. He even lets you submit papers early so that he can tell you if you answered the prompt correctly. Highly recommend.

Wow, I thought he was a great teacher. I had him 101 and 102 and a 200 level ST class. I thought he was an amazing teacher, he definitely doesn't think he is God. He's extremely intelligent, and he knows the answer to whatever history question you could possibly have. As long as you take decent notes and read the books he assigns you'll do fine.

From what Ive read, he seems to have gotten worse. Had him in Spring04, we took lots of notes, and gave us 2 sets of 3 essay topics, 1 from each on exam. I just memorized my notes and did well on exams. Actually offered to repeat the grade for our 1st essay if we didn't want to write another one. Attendance policy wasn't bad. Must be going downhill

What a know-it-all. He's so smart, and knows how smart he is, that he's way arrogant about his knowledge. He definitely knows what he's talking about, but is also quick to make you feel stupid. Lots of reading, frequent pop quizes, and essay tests. Definitely not a GPA booster.

Grades very tough...no matter how well you do on his essay tests, he will give you a C or lower!! No tolerance with students being late...even if it is just 30 seconds! He expects you to possess the knowledge a doctor of history when you are just trying to get your core classes in!

Do not take this professor... way too much work for an intro class more like a 300 level- - not worth the frustration of getting a C or a D and lowering your gpa.If you need this class for a general requirment DEFINATLEY A NO!!!!

this is a very hard class! he gives pop quizzes, but as long as you do the reading, you'll do fine. he knows EVERYTHING about history, and he's happy to answer questions. whatever you do, don't come to class late. he hates that.

Professor Speelman is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to History. His knowledge is incredible. The class is easy if you take notes and read what you're supposed to. He does give unannounced quizzes. He has 2 publications with numerous contributions to encyclopedias as well. Very intelligent man, most I've ever learned in a History class.

I really enjoyed history before this class. I WAS a straight A student until I took his class and struggled to get a C. The average grade on the midterm was a 'D'. When an entire class does poorly it is not a reflection on the student but the professor. My advice: If you had to choose between Satan and Speelman teaching the class...take Satan!

His class for me was facinating and Speelman is obviously very pastionate about history. He seems hard at first but once you show interest in his class you will realise hes a really nice guy. Id recomend this class to anyone interested in military history. He Knows his subject inside out and probably plays risk and nepolionic RPGS on the weekends.

It really is a ton of material, but he really knows his stuff, and being a history major, I found him to be a great resource of information. Don't take him if you're looking for an easy A, but if you like history and want to learn, he's really great. I easily made an A.

Attendance policy is terrible, -25 pts. for every absence. Lectures all period. Lots of material, expects you to know it REALLY well for tests. 2 papers, 2 essay exams. Helpful during class if you're confused. Boring class though, no discussion.

Do not take speelman, he's a horrible teacher. I have a minor in history, but this man makes me dislike history. I have to tell myself, its not the content that sucks, its the teacher...

Prof. Speelman is definitley not an easy teacher, but I thought his class wasn't that bad. Def take notes and pay attention, and DON'T MISS CLASS...he deducts your grade if you miss just one! Overall, I thought he was a nice guy and extremely smart, and he'll stop the lecture at any time to answer your question if your'e lost or don't get something

I had my doubts about him and fought hard to get out with the grade I thought I deserved. He's a stickler to detail..if you don't write what he thinks you should write, he claims it's wrong. I also find it hard to "be more specific" when the word limit on essays is 1000 and I'm over that already..more difficult than he has to be. Proceed w/ caution

Pretty anal about attendance. The book reviews were a waste of time academically, and there are only 4 grades. He knows what he's talking about. As someone else pointed out; don't take so many notes, just look up the stuff on the net before so that you know what to write about. I'm indifferent to the guy.

intelligent guy, definately knows what he's talking about. 2 papers, miderterm & final. he expects a lot out of his students but it isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. anal about attendance(no absenses allowed or your grade is deduced). all in all, not too bad
