Comment:
The worst professor at WashU. Will not listen to students and spends entire lecture on his ideas and his way of studying the literature, refusing any discourse on the matter. A disgrace to the Department. Does not provide constructive criticism, and often speaks to students in a derogatory way. Should be removed! WashU is aware and will not act!

Easily one of the worst academic experiences of my life. Rosenzweig seems incapable of grading essays that are not written in his own words and style. I took this class after having read the reviews on here and thinking that my passion for the subject would get me through his controversial teaching style. DO NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE. Avoid at all costs!

It has been proven that students do not benefit a lot from discussion-based classes. Rosenzweig wants us to learn from his deep reservoir of knowledge instead of students' own limited, shallow understanding of literature. He is an intellectual and he won't stoop to the mediocrity of masses. Take him if you are genuinely interested in literature.

Terrible class, awful professor. Refuses to entertain viewpoints other than his own, classes are lectures rather than discussions. Only saving grace of class was easiness of material. In all fairness, occasionally had interesting points to make, but outweighed by his insistence that his was the one and only interpretation of a text

Half of his lectures are incomprehensible. The other half are contradictory. His writing is littered with typos. Often he'll start a sentence and just not finish it. He is never clear about what he wants or is trying to teach. Taking this class has made me a significantly worse writer. He tries to be accommodating, but the class isn't worth it.

He deserves a much higher rating than he is given here. At times he can ramble, but overall I have found his lectures to be extremely interesting. He really cares about students and is always willing to help with and discuss papers. Recommended!!

It honestly astounds me that Paul Rosenzweig is a professor of anything, anywhere. He lectured my seminar class of 7 people and never let anyone express ideas or thoughts. The class time felt unbearable. Though I met with him several times, I could never get a handle on what he wanted for essays. The whole experience was bewildering. Avoid.

He's a very intelligent and friendly guy. However, he's a very poor professor. He teaches a literature class, but doesn't allow for discussions of ideas and theories. There's no ONE WAY to interpret a novel. Being lectured to for an hour and half about personal philosophy is not why I came to WashU. Seriously conisdering dropping the course.

I almost didn't take Prof. Rosenzweig's class because of the terrible reviews he's gotten. The truth is, the man is one of the nicest, most intelligent guys I've ever had as a professor. I'm honestly beginning to believe that those people that rated him so poorly must be talking about someone else... or they're liars. GIVE HIM A CHANCE AND SEE!

Worst professor I've had in a long time. He basically lectured the 8-person class every day and then criticized the papers instead of grading them. Don't take his classes.

A disgrace to the English department. The worst prof. at Wash U. From what I understand, the only reason he is still around is because he is married to someone important in the eng. dept. Tried to unteach every principle the Eng. dept. tries to get across in every other class.

Rosenzweig will make you write clear meaningful criticism of literature, even if he is abrasive, repetative, and distant. His classes are lectures, not discussions, but the novels he picks are premium. You will become a better thinker, even if it hurts, with his classes. He is an intellectual, albeit a wierd one.

If you want to get an A - write what he says in his lectures. Forget anything you have learned from every prof. ever (you know - think, infer, evaluate, form opinion) and just regurgitate - otherwise you will get a bad grade. And DON'T sit anywhere near him - he spits.
