Took him for Organic Chemistry I and had to drop the class. I am now retaking it with a different professor and getting an A. An assistant does his grading and when mistakes in graded were pointed out he wouldn't ever give points back. Went to speak with him during office hours, he was rude and not helpful. Everyone should avoid them if they can.

Made organic chemistry doable. He lectures directly from his PowerPoints, so it's helpful to print them out before class. They also tell you which additional pages to read--read what he doesn't cover! Do his supplementary problems and review previous tests; they're extremely helpful. He's not going to hand you the A. You have to work for it.

He's so smart and knowledgeable that it can be hard to keep up with him during lecture. Super knit-picky grader. His tests are difficult and are tough to finish in the time he gives unless you are extremely prepared. He expects you to do quite a bit of self study. He's a hard professor for sure.

Dr. Sampson is the worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't care about his students and makes you feel dumb if you ask a question. Exams are the hardest things you will ever take. No matter how prepared you think you are, the exam will still be hard. It's like he sets you up for failure

Dude!! I've never worked so hard for a class before. I had to study chemistry everyday to get an A in this class. I was literally breathing OCHEM lol. It's doable if you're committed to work hard. I'm taking Seed for ochem2 and I barely have to study and currently have 106% in the class. Sampson is rude and does not care about his students

You WILL work for this class. If you don't put in 100% from the start, you won't do well. That was my mistake, I managed to recover and pass to move on to O CHEM II, but I'm going to have to retake to make up for the damage the first few exams did. You will have to do the bulk of the work for this class on your own, its not just a 3 hour/week deal.

The secret to a good grade is tons of old exams online to practice that are very similar to his actual exams. However, there was never enough time to comfortably finish exams; after 50 minutes usually 95% of the class was still working. Be sure you know what you're doing, because you will run short on time and won't be able to linger on problems.

Students who complain about Sampson are the students who didn't study. 5 in-term exams plus the final, each increasing in weight as the semester goes helps avoid an early bad exam ruining your semester. Expectations are clear from the start, you have to take this class serious from day 1. Tough exams, but can be mastered if you do the practice sets

Didn't expect O. Chem to be this hard since I got A's in gen chem 1 and 2. This class has made me cry on multiple occasions. Not enough time to finish exams. Have to read the chapter to understand anything happening in the lectures. Once you understand the material, think again, the exams are harder.

The class is hard but he's a brilliant teacher. He's so clear and concise in his lectures and it's clear that he really knows what he's talking about. You have to do outside reading though and questions on exams are more application based than memorization. And you have to actually work hard for your grade. But it's an upper division course so??

Everyone i know got a C or lower no matter how much you study. he zooms through material, makes you feel stupid if you ask a question, and makes you do self-reading out of a 30 lb book that i swear is in a different language.

too fast pace makes you read/teach yourself on your own from book, impossible to finish tests on time even if you know the material and is the hardest grader Ive ever had. is not willing to help when you go to office hours. did awful in this class but very well in OChem 2 with Dr. Seed, which goes to show sampson is awful and makes things way harder

I came into Organic Chem expecting the worst. After the semester, I can honestly say Organic Chemistry is my favorite class. I have never learned more in a course before. Dr. Sampson is an amazing professor. He definitely challenges you and he encourages long-term learning. He tells you on the first day how to get and A, and if you do it, you will.

I'm a chemistry major and I had to definitely work in this class. Assigns out of class material and expects you to know it for the exam. Exams are really tough but gives you plenty of practice problems. Get a tutor, do practice problems and exams, and you'll be fine!

Treats this class like it is the only class his students' have. Runs over on time. Has you do a lot of self-teach material. Which does not help when he does it on tests; he only accepts answers that replicate what he would do. Avoid.

Gives tons pf practice problems and past exams/quizzes. Does assign sections to read in the book that he didn't have time to discuss. And you WILL be tested on it. Exams are really labor intensive and difficult to finish in time. But there are bonus questions, if you have the time.
