His exams are hard. Studying doesn't help since he does give you everything to look out for on an exam. The "textbook" is HIS book that he wrote. Useless.

When I took his course for the first time in the spring semester 2018 I personally think he's a genuine guy who gives good feedback on the essay questions and writing assignment. However you just have to make sure you take good notes and read the textbook provided to understand the lectures he says in each class.

Good professor but many flaws. Really tough grader, I made one mistake during the essay part of an exam and he took off 15 points! Talks A LOT and I would zone out and just memorize the textbook (that he wrote) before the test and I did pretty well just by doing that but I could've done better if I was more invested and not sobored. He is nice tho.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER, I thought it was going to be a breeze. He's a great professor, his jokes sure help. But when it comes to exams, although his essays are simple, the multiple choice could get a little tricky. I believe I deserved a higher grade, but with the wording/ jokes added to the exams, it made it a little harder for myself.

Great professor, but here are things to look out for: He uses his own textbook (it's free!). He's quite Liberal and will state his opinion a lot. Most importantly, he is a HARSH grader. If you don't explain something exactly how he wants in an essay you'll lose a lot of points. I got all mid 90s, never a 100. Essay Qs are given before the exam.

I loved this class! He's a super funny and friendly guy! Tests were fairly easy and he really encouraged you to do your best! I would love to take him again in the future!

The tests are very fair. Despite our political differences, this professor was one of the only professors that actually encouraged me to speak my mind despite having a different viewpoint than everyone else. Participate. dont be one of those students that just sits in the back of the class and acts like a mute.

This professor is passionate about History and will try to make you as well. He does his best to make the class funny and interactive. He will really make you work for your grade because there is so much material to cover. The class is a bit long which can fatigue you being a 3 hour long class but he lets you take a break on your own.

Professor Bales is a very dedicated into his work. He wants to be sure students are engaged in the real world and whatever situation is going on. However he is very clear with his exams and his instructions on the 10 page paper (literally he gives you the answers) and as long as you pay attention and study you will be fine.

Every single history class iv taken before him i have gotten an F. I took Professor Bales twice, for HI127 and 128 and got a B in both classes. Im not sure how a regular semester with him is but the summer and winter sessions were awesome and super easy. And hes funny too. I actually learned something from him and thats saying alot coming from me.
