Least pleasant classroom experience ever. I went to all the lectures, submitted all the assignments on time. At the last session he said he was gonna give me an A. Then grades came out and I got a B+. Don't know how his senile mind works but hey, is it fun treating your students like this??

DR. C and his TA's are a chill group of teachers. DO what they ask, go to recitation participate in class and you got yourself an A. Keep on the DL but this class is the best/easiest Culture and Context in the league, hands down.

Great professor - I agree with one of the other posters. He may seem senile at first, and maybe a little later on, but once you actually sit down and pay attention to what he has to say, you learn so much about Islam as a whole. I studied quite a bit for his exam, but I earned a very high mark, so it is doable. The TA's are harsher graders though

Although he may appear old and senile at first, Chelkowski is a very kind and intelligent man. He made Cultures and Context/Islam very interesting and even brought us on a field trip to a Sufi House. Easy A even if you don't give a damn...but if you do care, then you can not only get an A but learn a thing or two in the process.

If you just want to get your WC requirement done with minimal work, take this class. Class interesting first half, second half is useless, but you don't need to go to lecture anyway. No need to read the book(s) either-- just use wikipedia for all your papers and exams.

This class is an absolute joke. One of my friends never came to class simply studied 2 hours for the midterm and final and got A's on both. He is like ozzy osbourne.... senile incomprehensible rambling. Each class just went over the material we had covered in the previous class. He gave us every question that was on the midterm and final. Easy A

I was in World Cultures Islamic Societies, and the first half of the course was great. He was very clear, pretty well organized, and exceptionally funny. After we passed the midterm and sufism (his great love) the course degenerated, his lectures had no structure and he was no longer very clear. Still an easy class with a great first half.

Good intentions but very old. He doesn't communicate with the TAs and recitations are for explaining their own personal interests and "catching up" on what the professor tries to say. He is very senile and the constant microphone problems really don't help. Easier because he gives out answers, harder because the TAs have higher expectations.

i took his World Cultures: Islamic Societies class - even though he's rediculously old - he's awesome! the readings were dense sometimes and his classes weren't all that structured but they're interesting and the class in general was easy

Interesting class, pleasant lectures by the professor, but the TAs are deff harsher graders than the laid back prof which kind of throws you off. one of the easier world cultures.

Without a doubt, the best professor that I ever had in my entire university career. Explains things eloquently, and compells you to learn everything there is to know about his subject matter. I chose my major (MES) due to his inspiration.
