This professor made my life difficult, sure that could be that I'm bad at math but unless your willing to put in more time than you should you will not pass this class. In class, lectures are boring to sit through and you are lucky to cover 2 example problems in class, there is a quiz every day on the material you need to cover by yourself. good lu

Do your homework. Go to his office hours. Calculus is a difficult subject and he is a difficult grader, but by all standards he is a genius who is willing to help anyone that is willing to learn. If you don't know something, ask! Don't wait for the test to discover that you don't have a skill you need.

Had a couple of really great math professors here at Alfred State until I had Professor Burns. Would not recommend taking calculus from him. If students did not raise their hands to ask questions about the material he would not teach it, and still have a quiz on that material the next class. I decided to take calc across the street from AU instead!

Have you ever had a professor that cared about your grades and actually taught the class? Good, cause this is not him, you must come to class knowing the entire algebraic knowledge you learned from high school. There is no learning in this class, you sit for an hour go over one problem, and you wait for him to laugh at the fact that no one gets it.

Classic Burnsisms: -Calculus is intrinsically beautiful -calls students casual young mathematicians or pilgrims -(makes mistake) perhaps I've had too much coffee-or not enough -Once you've finished the homework problems, do all of the other problems in the book. And then buy another calculus textbook and do all the problems in that one

This man is not easy by any means. Sadly, if you want to pass, you have to actually read the book on your own time. The man is a genius by all means, but he teachers in a very different manner. As a student, you have to learn to adapt. He is not unfair about grading. He tells you exactly what to expect on quizzes and tests. actually quite funny

Honestly, every class you take with him has the same outcome. If you do not come into his classes with an enormous amount of background knowledge from high school for example you will need to teach yourself from the book. DO NOT RELY ON HIM FOR CLARIFICATION.

Takes the entire class to finish one problem and if you have a question about that problem he acts like its funny that you don't understand. How this guy is even still a teacher at Alfred beats me.

God awful teacher wouldn't wish anyone to have to suffer through this guys rants. If you have to take any math or physics courses do yourself a favor and pick someone else! He takes the entire class to go over one question and in the end never actually answers the question. He gave us a unit exam after only one week 6 chapters of new material!

Generally not available to offer help outside of class and often laughs at students asking questions during lecture. He promotes tutors to get the extra help students need but if you solve the problem with any other method than his, it is a 50% or more off the quiz even if you get the right answer. And only gives 5 min to finish the quiz.

On every quiz , if you make a simple error such as a misplaced negative anywhere in the problem he automatically takes 60% off the quiz grade.. more than one of these errors and its a zero. Many quizzes and only 3 tests and a final. Spends more time describing how beautiful the math is than actually teaching it. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS PROFESSOR

This man is a genius. May be tough to get used to his teaching method. He does a lot of detailed explanation. He's always there if you need help. Much easier to learn from if you go to his office and ask questions. Smartest person I've ever met.

He is the most amazing professor in all of history. I didn't particularly like him in Calc 1, but grew to really appreciate him in physics and Diff EQ; he makes you work, but teaches you reasoning skills; I am in my senior year now, and he is still the best professor I have ever had. If you don't want to work (or learn),don't waste his valuabletime

Unless you completely understand calculus, take the class with a different professor. Classwork is 1-5 problems he pulls out of nowhere and goes through without stopping to explain anything. Little to no partial credit is given on tests, which are never discussed after grades are handed back.

Be prepaRed to work. Thibisnnot a class you can just sit through and do well. He will assign 20 homework problems and expects you to do them. biggest probelm is testing. We may go over problems of one type, and You think you understand a little. the tests are completely different from practice problems. Also, no curving, harsh with partial credit

I think when over 85% of the class is failing... it's not the students failing... It is the professor failing... he does not care about teaching... so I don't know why he even shows up... I heard Whitehouse is the best math teacher (that cares) at Alfred... I wish i could get my money back...
