Dr. Vogt is definitely one of the toughest professors I have ever had. He expects a lot from you and expects you to thoroughly understand the readings and discuss them in class. He is not unfair though. He clearly states his expectations and how to succeed in his class and provides opportunities to grow. If you're a hard worker, you should do fine.

Be prepared to be treated like an idiot when he talks to you. It won't matter how much time you spend on the papers. He told me to my face he only read half my paper then failed me. Prepare to spend 3 times outside of class than you usually would for other classes to learn as he does not teach you anything. You will pass if you participate, though

He is disrespectful to students, such as when someone contributes to discussion in class he makes comments like, "I don't think you know what you're talking about" and drills you with questions. This guy has a 50% fail rate for a reason. He grades papers in a first year class like a graduate style class, AVOID HIM AT ALL COST!

Comment:
Philip Vogt is VERY condescending toward his students. He always brags about his "20+ years of teaching" whenever he can and gets upset if the class does not understand a reference he makes. He grades very harshly and doesn't offer any help. It is a philosophy course in a tech university. It shouldn't be so demanding. Avoid him at all costs.

No student wants to work for their degree and that is exactly what this professor makes you do. He doesn't "challenge" his students, he expects what SHOULD be expected of them. His class syllabus clearly states how to get an A in his class. The discussions in his class are so insightful. He is not arrogant or condescending, it's just how he talks.

Intelligent and well-versed in his field, but he's rather arrogant; flaunts his "19+ years of college education" every chance he gets. Often condescending. Don't worry about failing his papers; if you make worthwhile contributions to classroom discussion, give your all, and participate fully and frequently, you'll do just fine and he'll like you.

Overall a really good professor, although he does seem to grade unfairly, he is very fair in how he gives class participation points. As long as you do the reading and participate you'll do well.

The best, hardest not-math-or-science professor I've ever had. Do whatever you can to drop the papers, participate in class, and do well on the presentation and midterm/final to get a good grade. Aside from his hard grading, if you impress yourself well on him, he'll remember you forever. One of the most intelligent and inspiring men I have met.

Hard professor, but interesting to talk to. He expects a very high level of involvement, understanding, and commitment to his class. However, as I have explained to him, we as freshman do not have the ability to compete with a PHD with 20+ years experience. Hard, but you will learn! But if you really participate in debates, you will do fine.

Challenging. You will be hard pressed to get a good grade in his class. Grades his papers harder than any English teacher I've ever had. Very knowledgeable about the subject, however his advice is not always clear. Sometimes his inferences from the reading are flawed, but will agree to disagree

This professor is out to get us. He fails everyone's first paper because they are not concise enough. He makes you watch online lectures which are normally 1 hour or longer and then expects you to know everything on those lectures. Avoid him at all costs.

Don't even bother. He always seems uninterested and he comes off as intimidating. He's insulting and expects perfection, and you might feel too afraid to answer because you don't want to get told that you're stupid and wrong AND get a lower grade for it. Apparently, the average grade in his class is a D, or so he says. Still want to take his class?

Everything you read about this professor is true. He is extremely hard, but extremely inspiring. I failed the first paper, but his high expectations motivated me to actually DO the work, not try & do the hw an hour before class like the maj. of us do. I've learned so much from him & would definitely take him again

As much as I enjoy reading all of these hate-filled comments about Vogt, he is really the best prof at LTU. While I failed his class the first time, he has taught me more in a single year than I have learned at my entire stay at LTU. Students would be so much better off if they were REQUIRED to take him as a freshman.

Worst teacher ever at ltu. He has no compassion for anyone and acts like he is better then everyone. His grading on papers is horrible. No matter how much you put into your paper, he will fail it. He is not helpful in any way and fails 95% of his students paper. He cares for no one but himself. He needs to be fired. Also has the most annoying voice

It's not even funny how horrible this professor is. You will spend more time in his class then in your major classes and probably fail or drop it. Expects too much. Doesn?t take in account that you are trying your best and still makes you feel like crap if you don?t understanding something? I think I had an emotional brake down after his class!!!

Vogt is hard, but he is by far my favorite teacher @ LTU!!! I would have taken him again this year for another class, but he is on sabatical. I failed both papers, but still got a B. Why you ask? Because I read and participated in class and did well on exams I didn't always understand it. I made every effort to try. He is an AWESOME teacher!

He speaks to the class in a condecending manner and often becomes upset when nobody knows what is going on. He once threw a hissy fit and dismissed the class after insulting everyone because nobody had any idea what he was trying to get at. He is not a nice person. The class is much too hard for what it is.
