Comment:

Easily the best of the three professors that taught my BIO115. His lectures are quick and sometimes hard to follow, but he loves it when you ask questions, so if you're confused, he will re-explain until you get it. He's a botanist, and his interests are sex and ferns, so you can imagine that he gets a lot of laughs. We're sorry to see him retire.

Comment:

Dr. Hickey is great. He was the reason I signed up for my lecture section in the first place. The two other professors in the section were subpar. I consistently looked forward to his lectures. He makes everyone laugh and is very clear. Dr Hickey makes learning fun again.

Comment:

Hickey is a goofy guy and great at engaging the students during lectures, but his test questions can be quite difficult. BIO 115 is a difficult course as it because of the depth of material. Expect the class to be hard, but Hickey is a great professor. His lecture slides are also clear and make taking notes easier.

Bio 115 is a weed out class so the subject matter is very difficult. That being said Hickey is clearly passionate about what he teaches, which makes the class engaging and interesting. He's also hilarious and quite a nut. LOVES FERNS.

Dr. Hickey is an expert in his field, but his manner of teaching about the evolution of plants was difficult to follow. He was funny and connects well with students despite his age, but I don't think I wish to take any botany courses after going through his plant unit.

The class I had was mostly discussion, so attendance and participation played a big part in our grade. If you're ever lost or confused on the material, he has a good way of explaining things in a context you would understand. He is a fair grader and, in my opinion, is really good at holding the class' focus.

Dr. Hickey gave his last lecture in class so this is appropriate time to post. Dr. Hickey is extremely knowledgeable and as stated has a sincere interest in students learning the material. His questions are not as hard or tricky I think the challenge lies in taking all the details really understanding what is going on.Very helpful,nice,cool guy.

He's edgy, vibrant, charismatic, and provocative. As long as this man is standing at the front of a room, you will not find a sleeping [sober] soul in the room. His academic interests are mostly sex and plants. And he has a good sense of humor, especially if he's teaching you about sex. Nuff said.

Dr. Hickey was hilarious and also a phenomenal teacher. He is quite demanding and will expect you to know your stuff come exam time, but if you follow his lectures, study the material, and take notes during his lectures, you'll do fine.

Very enthusiastic teacher. Passionate about science. However, his exam questions are impossible and which kinda affected my grade a lot :( Take him if you want to have a fun time in class but prepared for the very tricky questions he will have for you.

Professor Hickey was by far, the best of the three professors teaching BMZ. Even though I am not interested in botany, he made his lectures interactive and fun. His questions on the exams are the hardest though, but he is extremely helpful if you see him during his office hours.

Amazing professor! He really expects you to know the material in depth. If you are good at synthesizing many concepts into a "big picture" you'll do fine on his test questions. Dr. Hickey is really cool. He cracks jokes all the time, and if you get him and Dr. Russell, they're a lot of fun together. He loves botany. His quizzes are kind of hard, but he's very helpful. When I failed the first exam, he had me come to his office and he helped me figure out how to study for the class. I did MUCH better on the next test

Of the three BMZ professors, Hickey was by far the most interesting, he was easy to understand and was always extremely helpful. His test question were hard, more connecting concepts than repeating information. Very good professor, made plants interesting.
