Comment:
Ridiculous amount of information for one class. However, I really respect Dr. Roth, he is really caring. (My TA graded rather harshly though.) Recitation is the important thing, and reading is essential, or else you'll fail. Gained a lot of great knowledge about history outside of the U.S. and Europe, which is refreshing, so I learned a lot.

Professor Roth cares dearly for his students. He reminded me more of a grandpa due to being personable, empathetic, and wanting to make sure his students succeed. Easy to talk to outside of class, but the midterm and final are very difficult and require preparation. He gives you the questions two weeks beforehand, so use all the time that is given.

This class was way too intense for a GE. There was SO much reading. Roth was nice enough and lectures were okay, but if youre not super dedicated I wouldnt recommend. He also doesnt post any grades on Carmen. (He did send an email after the semester saying that he would change things and lessen readings but who knows)

Professor Roth is an amazing professor, but this class is a lot of work (specifically reading) for a GE. I would highly recommend if you are motivated to learn about the history of criminal justice in the United States, but it won't be an 'easy A'. He gives amazing and interesting lectures, and is a fair grader. Show improvement, get a good grade!

Just avoid. This is the most ridiculous class I've taken during all of undergrad. He's a nice guy, but he is just expecting too much from one class. 3 papers, 2 films, weekly quizzes over 200-300 pages of reading, midterm and final that require you to cite sources directly without having the sources with you. He is just trying to do too much. Don't

This is the worst class I have ever taken in my time at Ohio State. Do not take any classes with him whatsoever. He expects you to have PhD level knowledge, three papers, weekly reading quizzes over 200-300 pages a week, and you have to write essays for the midterm and final and cite specific evidence without having the sources with you.

Roth is an old dude, but still active. He assigns a TON of reading and expects you to remember details from all of it. I took this class as a GE and it ended up being very difficult. If you're not actually interested in the topic and just need to fulfill a GE, don't take him.

He is very nice and a good guy, but the lectures were dry as a bone, and the exams (the final, at least) were source heavy. You had to reference sources from the book without having the book. Few quizzes that he warns you about, they are pretty easy. You must read the sources for this class, or know people who are willing to tell you about them.

He knows everything you could think to ask about, which is cool but sometimes gets him off track. Lectures are a tad boring but not terrible. He gives major hints as to what he wants to see on the midterm/final in class, so it's worth going I think (plus semi-mandatory attendance).

Roth is an amazing guy! I cannot stress how much he cares about his students. He gives you the exact questions that are going to be on every quiz, midterm, and the final. He's a genius - he can recall all of the material off the top of his head. He assigns so much reading and it's a lot of memorizing but it's worth it to have him as a professor!

If you don't like reading don't take this class. He's a great professor and really cares about his students but the amount of reading he requires for his class is ridiculous. I do enjoy hearing his stories, Dr. Roth is awesome!!

THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD AT OSU. He is a true renaissance man. If you attend lectures (which I recommend or else preparing for exams will be a nightmare) you will come away feeling enlightened and equipped to think critically about historical events in a whole new way. It is a lot of reading but worth the work.

Prof. Roth is very accommodating with extensions for papers. The class I took had no tests, even though he technically should have sent them. Personally, I got away with not doing any readings, but you should at least skim them, and go into greater detail for the ones you'll be using for your papers.

Such an amazing professor and person! He is such a wealth of knowledge, the man literally knows everything. Possibly the best professor I've had at OSU. The readings are long but you can usually read the first half and skim the rest, his lectures go over everything.

One of the NICEST professors I have EVER had. He sincerely cares about the success of his students. If you engage in the lectures, and really try to get something out of the class, it is a great course to take. Lectures can get a little off topic, but definitely recommend this professor.
