Joan was brilliant. Her lectures were very interesting and as long as you show up and listen you should easily get an A. Very few assignments but all easy. I would be sure to take her classes again!

Prof Cashin is amazingly knowledgeable about her subject, and if you like American History then you should take her classes. No powerpoints, but taking notes is easy if you pay attention. Small discussions where you show up and say one thing. 3 books to read. Enjoyable and relatively easy, Prof Cashin is very likeable.

She is.... old school. Be ready to show up. Be ready to get called on if your eyes wander. No online material. The books you read are the type you can order on Amazon from goodwill for 99. Which is nice. But also indicative of the dated material. She seemed nice enough. This is definitely not a show-up-and-pass course. Tests & seminars are TOUGH.

If you are serious about history, specifically Antebellum American and the Civil War, then take her classes and you will not be disappointed. She is incredibly knowledgeable and well read. You must go to class, she takes attendance everyday. A really easy grader as long as you do the work. I take her every semester I can, she's great.

No actual textbooks, but 3 book discussions that are pretty easy. 3 short writing assignments that are passfail, 8-10 page paper, and a final which she gives you a study guide for. Pretty easy grader. Lectures can be somewhat dry sometimes, but overall I really liked her.

The easiest class I've taken in my life. The definition of an easy A. Take somewhat good notes and you'll pass. Your grade consists of: Couple group discussions (say one thing), attendance, like 5 one page papers, and a final (you write a paragraph explaining each key termeventperson). She will give you a long study guide for the final.

Joan is a very oldschool professor. She's cool though, very knowledgeable. She expects you to attend every class. There are 3 book discussions, a final paper, and a final exam. Each is worth 20% of your grade. Show up to class, say one thing in the discussions, do the paper and study the guide for the final and you will probably get an A. Easy

As a Harvard graduate and student of David Donald Herbert, Dr. Cashin provides students with an unparalleled depth of knowledge. I am truly lucky to have had her as a Professor. If you are a serious historian then take her course. She is lenient on assignments and gives students many chances. If you do the readings and show up you should do well.

As others mentioned, she does kind of drone on. If you're interested in history, it's great, but she says a lot of stuff you won't ever see on a midterm or final. I probably only ended up using a third of my notes to study because most of it wasn't on the study guide. The midterm and final were supeeer easy, though, as long as you study the guide.

Dr. Cashin knows her Civil War history. If you show up and listen during class, you will find yourself very knowledgeable about the subject. There are three book discussions, and you have to find five primary documents and write five one-page papers about why they are interesting. This was the easiest class ever, but I enjoyed it.

She has a tendency to drone and the lack of visual aid makes it harder. She also gives you a lot of info that you won't need for the final, but it is interesting if you like the subject. It was very easy, however, so all in all a good class to take

Had no sympathy for my medical situation that prevented me from attending class regularly. Violated every right of medical privacy, saying that she had to know in order for me to pass. At one point, she told me (verbatim) that "the grading system put forth on the syllabus was arbitrary and was changed when the situation deemed necessary".

INsanely boring... especially for an 830 class... she is knowlegable but tends to ramble on and on with no visual aids so you end up writing down an insane amount of stuff you dont need... the structure of the class is easy but attendance is mandatory... good luck not falling asleep!

Very knowledgeable about women in the Civil War; not so much on general CW history. Described the Monitor as a "prototype submarine." Became resolute when a student tried to correct her. Described the Homer painting "Prisoners from the Front" as a scene showing 5 Southern prisoners, when 2 are clearly Union guards. Doesn't like to be corrected.

Took 557.02 with her, she is incredibly knowledgeable, she spoke essentially nonstop the whole two hours, full of fun tidbits of history that you don't usually get to learn. Also, this is the first 8:30 am class I've yet had where I wasn't pissed at having to go to, I actually looked forward to going to an 8:30am class??? What's happened to me?
