I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Professor Smith is a little off-putting in the beginning because he is so enthusiastic, but he is really hilarious and makes lectures as interesting as possible.

If you want to write 1000 word essays for every class over interesting readings this is the professor for you. The material is interesting and he is energetic but he grades ridiculously hard and is very pompous when you ask for help, my advice steer well clear of any of his classes

At times his grading seemed arbitrary. We didnt get back assignments until right before our final paper was due. The final was comprehensive from more than 500 pages of his special book. He's really smart and pretty helpful if you take the time to talk to him, but I shall avoid any more classes with him.

I've taken Smith for three classes. He does them all the same... quizzes and tests straight from the review questions. Read and you'll do fine. Lots of reading though. Puts things into perspective on a larger scale which helps with the whole education experience. He's goofy but a very good teacher who knows what he's talking about.

Prof. has a goofy sense of humor. He's studied a lot and knows what he's talking about. At first I wondered what some of the readings had to do with theology but it became clear when he started talking about it. All questions on quizzes and tests are straight from the review questions he posts online.

Professor Smith does seem really into his teachings...I'll say that for sure. What I signed up for was TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH yet I did not learn much about my faith at all. I learned some history but thats it! I dont feel I got my moneys worth seeing as how I went in knowing nothing new about the teachings of the catholic church.

favorite theology class so far. it's kind of hard to take notes because he talks so fast but he seems very passionate about what he teaches. he does go over class time and keep us for a few extra minutes because he has so much to say. there were no essay assignments. make sure to read there are quizzes. and tests are easy as long as you study.

Prof. Smith gives you bunches of readings and expects you to know all of it---according to how he understood it-not how the book actually writes it!!! makes it hard to answer correctly in the quizzes.

It's a lot of reading 100+ pages a night and will be tough to juggle if you're a science major and taking other rigorous courses. Take Fr. Pilsner. This professor isn't very clear with what he expects you to know for quizzes and talks to much about nonsense, rather than focusing on the Catholic church as much as other professors. Good luck.

gives a lot of reading and just repeats it in his lectures, not actually teaching anything of his own. READ AND KNOW MATERIAL...IF SO, YOU'LL DO OKAY

the book is big, yes. but its not too much to read once you see how his layout of the readings are.he was really into what he was teaching and that made the class interesting. overall a great teacher. just do what you're supposed to and you'll be fine

Excellent! Yes, there's TONS of reading and yes, that can get annoying. However, he's high-energy & obviously loves what he does. My favorite was the first portion, where all the reading is about discovering yourself, what your purpose is, why you're here (at UST), etc. There is VALUE beyond the classroom's 4 walls; just pay attention & you'll see!

funny, very passionate about this subject, which is good - theology is not inherently exciting. at all. keep up with the reading (there is quite a bit) and you should be fine.
