Extremely hard to follow. Lectures are disorganized. This class was by far the most hated class I have taken in my entire college career. If you don't have to take the class, definitely don't.

The class was fine. He is straightforward in what he expects from the students. The review material is incredibly helpful for the exams. Lectures are a little dry, but if you are involved in discussions they are manageable.

really set in his opinions. sometimes asks generalized questions and demands specific answers. really goes off topic quite often. if you take notes and attend every lecture you should be ok. not an easy A though.

I found the material he taught to be very interesting but he does have very high expectations of his students. It's not an easy A and its not a class where you can afford to miss lectures. Even when I've gone to him after class he doesn't spoon feed you BUT he does appreciate the extra effort. He's pretty set in his ways.

I took HIST 342 & 441 with Dumett. I participate in class, studied very hard, and worked with him on my term papers. He writes my letters of recommendation whenever I need any. If you put forth the effort, he's a great ally.

Some of the comments on here are pretty harsh. Still, his notes often vary from what is said in the textbook (dates, names), and he is extremely boring. He veers off topic often which makes for very disorganized lectures. I will not be taking another history class with him.

I find his lectures interesting; some of the comments on here are pretty unfair. He demonstrates extensive knowledge on the subject matter and is extremely helpful, though contacting him outside of class can be difficult.

He is a smart man who brings up good subjects and debaates for his class. With this being said he can be disorganized, and his classes are not for those who want to slack.

This professor should not be teaching anymore. His lectures are not organized and he goes off topic every three minutes.I do not suggest taking his classes.

Well I think he's a smart guy- i mean he's like 80 and has been teaching for forever- but he is just incredibly boring. And thats not the worst part, his lectures are all over the place, no organization, and conflicting information on handouts. Taking notes is 10x harder because of this.

i imagine the negative comments are from people who got bad grades. he is not a teacher for slackers. lots of these comments are by undergrads & let's be honest, Purdue is not a known as a school for true intellects esp. at the undergrad level. he should be focused on older students who appreciate his knowledge & experience. I like him

From what I've seen people either love him or hate him. Generally, if you don't want to work or learn anything, you hate him. I learned more in this class than any other, and his range of knowledge is incredible. Lectures can get long, but if you attend class and take notes then exams are really easy and predictable. It's a hard class but worth it.

Quite possible the most boring prof ive ever had. Lectures had no structure, had the tone of an un-oiled lawn mower for an hour and 15 minutes. I would actually leave class frustrated that I had learned nothing more than what i already knew

If you want to read a hooribly written book, take his class - "Mining tycoons in the age of empire, 1870-1945 : entrepreneurship, high finance, politics and territorial epansion" is 2008's crummy history treatise. The only thing worse than the treatise is listening to the man who wrote it drone on and on. Ashgate Press should go out of business!

History is my major and I'm still struggling in his class. His lectures are often difficult to follow, he's not always clear about his expectations, and he often veers off topic. I've spoken to him one on one frequently and he's always been quite nice. He obviously knows his topic well... just shouldn't be teaching it any more.

Dumett - they should call him doofuss. Good Lord, I once drank a bottle of sunsweet prune juice before his class and another one in it so that I had an excuse to leave early. I stank the classroom up and nearly sharted myself, but at least he couldn't hold me hostage under the circumstances. The flow that ensued was worth it.

Taking a class with Raymond Earl Dumett is a lot like flushing your head down the toilet. There is no value in the experience. I love British history, and probably would have majored in it, if it didn't involve working with this boorish oaf. I wish he would go back into those West African mines, and take Ingrao with him.

This is a serious rating - not just a rant. How can Purdue keep this guy teaching. Is tenure so sacrosanct that the school doesn't have the balls to get rid of him. Hey Purdue, my parents got rid of our Ford Pinto when the news wasn't favorable about that car. Dumett is worse than the Pinto, he doesnt explode - at least then we'd be rid of him

He turned African history into a disgrace -I mean, its almost like Purdue hired him to make the subject uninteresting and demeaning to the subject. I am not joking - this guy is full of s$#t, and when you try to talk to him, he is rude.
