Professor Shiner was one of the best professors I had at Colgate. She genuinely cares so much about her students, and she is incredibly helpful in office hours. She'll push you to learn, while creating a comfortable environment. Her classes are always engaging and she is very knowledgeable of the literature. 10/10 would recommend!

I am glad I had the opportunity to take a course with Professor Shiner. It is evident that she genuinely cares about the wellbeing of her students. All of the class material was purposeful and contributed to our understanding of the course topic. Her tests were very fair, and she always outlined her expectations clearly.

Truly a wonderful professor! Professor Shiner cares about her students and is always available to explain or reiterate course material or anything psych related outside of class. Lectures and coursework are all very interesting, all her assignments and readings have a purpose and you never feel as if you read/did something for nothing.

Amazing lady & amazing professor!! She cares so much about her students success and even in a class of 150+ I still felt like we made a connection. She's really easy to talk to outside of class, and super excited about everything she teaches which makes it much easier to get into!

Great, great professor! Very interesting, funny, and knowledgable. Gave great examples that tied into the material. Definitely the best teacher of a lecture-based class that I've had so far at Colgate. Not the easiest grader, but I would absolutely take a class with her again!

Shiner is awesome. She explains everything very clearly, and her lectures are fun. She always has videos in between her powerpoints that make class very interesting, and as long as you go to class and do the reading, it's pretty easy to do well on the tests.

Her lectures were interesting and clear. I loved the way she used movies to illustrate concepts. She asked questions, which made the 140-person class feel a lot smaller. She was very kind in and out of the classroom.

Shiner made a 150 student course seem like a ten student classroom when she taught intro. Her lectures were clear, almost painstakingly clear at that, and while her level of interest piqued when we finished clinical stuff, she tried really hard to make the course interesting. And VERY VERY easy.

So nice and really helpful. When I emailed her for help on an essay she responded immediately and really helped me out. Her quizzes are also very straightforward, and she gives you a good idea of what to study. Her powerpoints were very organized.

Professor Shiner is wonderful. She's a very clear and interesting lecturer, and even finds a way to make the psychology related videos watched in class very interesting. She's also very kind and approachable, and has a great sense of humor. She clearly loves her field and will do a great job of getting you to love it to! Highly recommended

I took 3 courses with Shiner & she was fantastic in every one. She explains material clearly, & is willing to explain again if necessary. She has high expectations of her students but prepares students so that they are able to meet them. You'll work in her class, but it is worth it - the assignments are thoughtful & the material sticks with you

Take a class with Shiner if you want to feel like you are back in an elementary school class. Shiner talks to you like you are 5 years old and constantly makes references to her children and compares her students to them (they are under the age of 10). She repeats everything 3 times and can't stay on schedule. Nice and very fair, but annoying

As great as the reveiws have been for Shiner, she's not really all that amazing. A good and fair grader, organized and clear, I must admit. But tends to call on the out-spoken people more than the shy ones, and eventually picks favorites. And DEFINITELY reads these reviews and probably removed all the negative ones already.

I've had Prof. Shiner for Developmental Psyc and for Intro. Her developmental Psych class is really interesting and is a must-take for anyone that is considering a clinical career (I esp. appreciated the video clips). She's also very helpful and cares a lot about making sure her students UNDERSTAND what is goign on.

Comment:

Professor Shiner was an excellent professor. Her teaching style was well-organized and interesting, and she clearly cares about the material and her students. Most importantly to me, though, she has served as an ongoing mentor to me (now 5 years out!) as I have pursued my own career in psychology.
