I feel like those who are giving him bad ratings were the same ones who didnt show up for class half the time. He was an amazing professor, super knowledgeable about the topics being taught. But seriously dont miss a single day in class or youll be behind. Also study. Overall fun class and great Professor.

R. Combs is the worst professor I have ever had. I received the highest test score in the class with a B and he marked my grade down to a C for miss spelling a word. He will not allow any students to get a B+ or higher. I have a 3.8 GPA and he will ruin in because he doesn't believe that student success is important.

I took his contemporary moral issues philosophy class as a freshman. I feel like everyone else who rates him makes him sound horrible. His class isn't super easy but it's not that hard. You HAVE to go to every class and do the reading. The tests are only 2-3 essay questions and they are very specific questions. I liked him.. just go to class!

Professor Combes is tough teacher and grader. But he is a nice and cool guy. Be sure to read! If you don't read you're totally screwed. Overall he just basically wants A LOT of details. On the tests he asks specific questions about certain things, and if you can't answer it right then you're in the dump.

Rude and seems to take pride in the fact that nobody can get an A in his class. Very strict about random things like yawning too loudly and being late even if it's only 1 minute. He will yell and embarrass you in front of the class if he has a problem with you instead of giving you a warning first or pulling you aside after class. Full of himself

Intelligent, eccentric guy. Have a reason for your opinion during discussions. It's a hard class, but not Impossible to get an A.

Combes is a very intelligent professor. You absolutely have to come to class if you expect to pass (not mandatory). Every day is more or less a lecture, so be prepared to take several notes. He makes sure you understand while you're in class, though very hard to get in touch with out of class (except if you go to his office hours).

Very cool subjects and the debates are fun. He grades really harsh and has never gave anyone a B+ or higher. There are three test with only two questions on them. One paper 5-7 pages long. I went to the writing center and had it looked over twice and I still made a C. If you aren't going to study hard, or you're bad at memory don't take this class.

Richard Combs is not only rude but by far the most awful teacher I've had at upstate. Everyone that was in my class that I talked to made a C- or lower. He lets you redo the one paper for that class but there's no point because you're still going to get a D on it. His tests are awful and he grades way too hard. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS EVER!!!

THIS GRADE IS NOT GIVEN ITS EARNED.Over all i loved the class (211) .

The whole class pretty much struggled. Nobody seem to get higher than a C on the test. His test are two questions, no multiple choice, EVER! No pop quizzes or quizzes at all. No study guide and when you ask questions about the test, as in an example of a question that may show up on the test, he NEVER answers them.

lectures and wants feedback every class. tests are in essay form, only a couple questions each.. but must be clear on what your saying and basically repeat word for word what he says in class. must pay attention and come to class to understand whats going on. interesting but don't take just for fun if you want an A or B. lots of studying required

A great and interesting professor, but his tests will make you want to rip your own hair out. He doesn't want you to understand and summarize the information you've learned-- he wants you to regurgitate word for word exactly what he says during class. I got an A in his class, but I worked harder for it than I have for any A in my life.

Amazing Professor! Just make sure you have reasons for the things that you believe, if you don't then he will eat you alive, rightfully so. Take Good Notes and be a good student(show up to class, participate, read the material, and study) and you should be fine.

Combes is an awesome teacher. One of the best I have ever had. He hates it when people don't come to class, hardly ever cancels class, requires your undivided attention at all times, and randomly calls on people during class to answer questions. He makes class interesting and fun. He's not rude, you just have to understand his humor. Great guy.
