Comment:
Professor Greenfield is by far the best professor I have had at Queen's. He is an excellent lecturer and leads engaging seminar discussions in addition to assigning interesting readings that cover a range of view points. Byzantium is a wonderful course if you are willing to put the work in, and I would recommend his Crusades seminar to anyone!

Greenfield is a really nice guy, he loves his material, and he genuinely cares about the students. That being said, his lectures were super long and could get quite dry, he assigns a ton of readings, and marks rather harshly. I enjoyed aspects of the class and learned a lot, but I got the lowest grade I've ever had in a university course.

Prof Greenfield is really nice and very passionate, however I found classes hard to sit through as most of the information was hard to follow. The midterm for the class is optional. The paper was on one of ten questions that seemed very basic (ie What is ____ why is it important?) , but then graded toughly. Overall, okay.

Comment:
Greenfield has a very traditional style with readings, lectures, and minimal assignments. He is very strict about deadlines. I attended very few lectures and really had to work and stress in the class as I personally found his lectures (and the subject) very dry but I was still able to get a decent mark. Try hard to keep up, it's a really big topic

Nice guy! He does indeed lecture in a very traditional way. You just sit and listen to him talk from notes, so if you are used to being pampered by profs who do fancy discussions, movies, technology etc he may not be your thing, but he certainly knows his stuff! He marks hard initially, but then marks the final easier, so it balances out.

Definitely a LOT of terms to learn, but very interesting material- I loved the class! I would recommend taking the course. The only negative thing I could say is that he tends to mumble a bit which makes it difficult for taking notes...

History 218 was really dry, he's a really hard marker and expects you to know just as much about Byzantine history as he does, get ready to memorize 65 names of emperors that are not english and repeated

Greenfield is a really great guy and is really passionate about his material, but the set up of the course was horrendous and I learnt just about nothing. There were way too many readings, which I wasn't compelled to do because they were useless. Overall, great prof, terrible course.

Greenfield's a nice enough guy, it's true. But 243 was crammed with far too much information for a half credit course. He's a tough marker, especially for a second-year level course. Be warned: interesting course, but extremely difficult to do well in.

Excellent professor. Slightly heavy on the readings, but he more than makes up for it in his teaching style, genuine concern and overall amazing professor status. Take as many courses with him as you can.

If he's not teaching Byzantine History, he usually teaches something related. He's so enthusiastic about the topic, you can't help but feel the same. He's also quite funny and very accomodating and helpful if you do run into trouble with the material.

Really loves his stuff, easy enough exams, presents things clearly, but he does stutter a bit and goes on tangents. I'd definitely take another of his classes though.

A fantastic prof. (I wish the rest of his colleagues were as effective, interesting and enthusiastic about their subjects.) The seminar exams/tests aren't easy, but it is possible to do well if you make an effort. Rewarding, fascinating class.
