Comment:
Professor Messner is one of those professors who make you really work hard for the class. And in all honesty, that is the only way to learn dense material. His lectures are etiquette, and exams are hard. But not falling behind and not skipping class is key to getting through the class. He explains things very well, and will help if you go see him.

This guy is really into what he does and you're going to hear about it. His tests are really tough like stupid hard. His lecture slides are really well put together he knows exactly what he's talking about and does an okay job of explaining things. Very easy to fall behind in his class so keep up and go to lectures.

No partial credit in tests. He appreciates if you make an effort in his class and will give extra points for it. Looking back at it now, i believe he does this so that people can realize that this may not be the major for them before they realize it too late. I knew people who switched/dropped out because of this class. Go to class, he notices.

Exams are practically impossible. Study guides are misleading. Works you very hard even though no pre reqs are required. Definitely a weed out class. You better go to class and study his slides like they are the only class you are taking.

Prof Messner is a great guy. He doesn't let you use electronics in class, which is ironic. His exams are tough to say the least. I understand the material, but most of my friends are struggling. You need to study and reading the textbook genuinely helps. Do all homework, and participate in class - even just nodding your head in understanding.

Do every hw, go to/listen in every lecture, ask questions! Really good lecturer and if you pay attention it will save you potentially hours on wrestling with the material if you skipped lecture or didn't pay attention. Exams are tough, but he will scale your final grade an amount based on how much effort he sees(lecture attendance and hw)

If youve taken ECE 401 with him, ECE 543 is not as easy as 401 was. He expects you to learn everything perfectly. Partial credit barely exists in his exams, so try to learn everything and redo Homework before tests. Go to every class because he appreciates the effort and may help you out if he sees that you are making an effort.

Homework counts for a small percentage of your final grade, but definitely do it. It helps prepare you for tests and at the end of the year if you participate in class and do homework he will use at to boost your grade, but he doesn't tell you this. Definitely go to his office hours aND be persistent when asking for help, he will respect you more.

Lectures begin helpful and clear and then drone on confusingly as he goes over countless examples without much explanation assuming the class understands the topic already. Tests are hard and obscure and graded very strictly. Lots of homework, most of which has nothing to do with the tests.

Dr. Messner is easily the best professor I've ever had. He is demanding, and you will need to work hard, but you will really learn the material.

Messner demands a lot from students, weeding out many from engineering. His slides are extremely helpful. You will get a group project, in an effort to prepare you for industry. Exams are difficult and he gives no partial credit. Study ludicrously and don't give in, he's trying to prove you're engineer material.

You will do tons of work to get a good grade. His lectures are all you need, but the book can still be useful and required for homework. He is fair bit a tough grader, not much partial credit.

Probably my least favorite professor of my college career. Heavily and openly favors ECE student (even has a section to put your major on every assignment). Exams tend to have questions that either aren't relevant, are things he hasn't taught, or are things he says he won't put on the exam. Terrible professor, terrible time. Avoid if possible.

Extremely good lecturer. His slides are all you really need to study to do well in the class. Very unapproachable and short with students but encourages questions and outside help. Terrible for GPA, good for actually learning the material.

Hes a good guy. First test will surprise you if you havent studied hard. His slides are like the bible for the class, helps learn the material rather than memorize, I am and ME and had no prior knowledge of many of the subject and battled my way through. But make sure to study hard for that first test or it will hurt your grade.

Professor can get off topic at times, and is definitely teaching toward ECE students though CS students must take the course. Those without ECE experience may not do well without private study of topics that can be glossed over at times in this course.
