Comment:
Petersen is the better chem teacher at Memphis. Quiz material is made aware of before the quiz but tests are nothing like the study guides. Barely any homework, and only used mastering chemistry once or twice. Petersen lectures every class and will answer questions but is hard to follow. Go to the chem learning center. Really have to work to pass.

Dr. Richard Petersen is a professor who listens to the students and gives you a precise and meticulous answer and explanation of what a student wants to know.

He's an awesome professor, and I definitely thought I was going to have an A in this class, but that was not the case. The lectures make you feel like you understand the material and you have your life together, but NOPE! When it came to the tests it was completely different. He's extremely helpful though. DO THE ONLINE WORK! You need it.

GET READY TO READ: You will not understand one topic during this class. You will have to spend hours doing homework and extra reading. LECTURES ARE LONG: The lectures are so long that you will fall asleep and wish that it were the end already. TEST ARE TOUGH: Self explanatory he doesn't teach just points and talks. I wish I could score 0s.

Do not take this man. After reading all of the great reviews on here I thought I could do well as I had did well in Chem 1 and have a high GPA. After taking him I did not learn one thing and will have to retake next during the summer. Avoid if possible! We did not even have a teacher assistant.

Dr. Petersen is great! Sit up front though, because he's a bit quiet. He explains things clearly, and I made an A both semesters I had him. The only thing I can critique is that he's not the best with responding to emails, so say whatever it is in person! If you do well in his class, it doesn't go unnoticed.

Petersen is a godsend. I did not earn that D+. That class isn't impossible to pass, you just have to study for it. I didn't study enough. He helped me anytime I asked for it. He is calm and makes class interesting. I wasn't prepared for Chem 1 but he really did explain everything well. TAKE HIM.

I'm a chemistry major so I found this class fairly easy because I find it interesting. Dr. Petersen is a great professor very down to earth and calm. His tests are a little tough, but study for it and it is not terrible. Definitely recommend him. I took him for Chemistry 1 and now I have him for Chemistry 2 honors. Great class!!

Dr. Petersen was really easy going and willing to offer help to those who needed it. He really knew his stuff and presented it well. What killed me was the material itself and my lack of studying. With the help of his curb at the end of the semester I managed a C+ instead of a D-. If you decide to take the class, I would recommend studying.

I have to say, I'm glad I took my brother's advice in enrolling for this class. I'm kinda disappointed that we virtually never used the textbook itself (the pages were on the projector, though). Nevertheless, he's a great guy: smart, helpful, down-to-earth, and easy to relate.

Tests are very little like the practice exam and nothing like the quizzes and homework. Tests are harder than what is taught. Homework is outrageous with 111 problems for one chapter alone, for example, for a total of 10% of grade. Stay away if you can.

I don't know why anyone would say that Dr. Petersen was a bad teacher. I had the worst chemistry teacher in high school so i was really behind but after two weeks in his HONORS class I understood everything. he is monotone and his jokes are bad, but if you work hard youll pass. Chemistry isnt easy, but he makes it a hell of a lot better than others

Absolutely awful. I took his class after seeing great reviews on this website. I was very disappointed. This is the only class I have ever failed in the entirety of my academia. Do not take his class unless you have an exceptional talent for chemistry.

Had him for bioorganic chem over the summer, much easier than Baker.Quizzes and midterm are very easy, they come straight out of his ppts and lectures.but the final is way hard and is out of 150pt,he took Baker's final exam and gave it to us,so it was very hard since we didnt go over the things that was on the final.Highly recommended for bioorganic.

I had Petersen for Chem 1100 also. He's the best chemistry teacher in the entire department. he gave curves on all three tests. Compared to other teachers who just give notes, petersen actually works chemistry problems in class, so students aren't too lost outside of class. Take notes, study, and prepare yourself. A good grade is possible. =)

Low-key guy. Quizzes and tests are announced. Some takehome graded assignments - do them! Powerpoints are a mess - better when he writes on the board. Math-heavy class. Textbook isn't necessary but I recommend you read it. Class doesn't cover all the book does - but he doesn't expect you to know the extra. Online Smartwork stinks, but req'd.
