He may not a good instructor for some students, but he is a great linguistic scholar! He is too intelligent to teach undergrads kids... That's why some Chinese beginners are grumbling about his lecture...

Prof. Simmons can't be credited more on his excellence in mastering of the Chinese language. Since this course is only available in summer, each of its period lasts more than three hours & a half just like other summer courses. He successfully managed to inject humor and vitality into the course content to make grammar less weary. Highly recommend!

He uses a TA who knows her stuff but can't help you with translation into English, which is about 50% of what you actually do. He isn't very pleasant and doesn't have much patience for students. There's a lot of work for this class, including biweekly quizzes, a midterm, and lots of homework. You have to go to class to do well.

BORING. LOTS of memorization, make sure you have friends to take it with you. he reviews before the exams, but you do have to study. if you have a photographic memory, this course is for you. but then again, this is a 400 level class. so it is ok.

Characteristics of a Chinese Language. He's very nice, gives extra credit. I didn't think this class was going to be so difficult. If you understand his lectures and take good notes, then you should be able to do well. His quizzes and exams are all from his lectures, and he generally tells you what pages to read/memorize (dates and stuff).

Probably the hardest class I have ever taken, ever! But he teaches it well and knows what he's talking about. He knows where we're comming from in learning the language for the first time and doesn't discriminate either. Even if you fail you leave class feeling you learned something. Not much can be said bout the TA's though.

He pulls no punches. You know what to study and when all tests and quizzes are b/c everything you do is planned in the syllabus for the whole semester. Breaks down the language very nicely. I will other language depts. would take tips from his teaching style. Gives extra credit, too.

His class is a walking dose of sleeping pills. Boring as hell, it would be better if he was more straightforward and went directly to the point, instead, he tries to explain it in some of the most hard to understand ways! Attendance is also a must, big bummer!

Great teacher. he grades on improvement so if you do poorly in the beginning do not worry. He makes sure that everyone understands the material before he moves on, so if you don't let him know and he will be more than glad to help you.

He is a great teacher! He seems intimidating at first, but once the course gets going, he is pretty funny. He is good about explaining things in way that you can relate to (at least for me). He is understanding and helpful. Just keep up with the work.
