Rick was easily one of my best teachers during the semester. His course (CRWR 1202) puts a huge emphasis on group discussion and he really sets a welcoming atmosphere. Hella accommodating. A published author and with experience as an editor, his feedback for your written work is extremely helpful and constructive. 10/10 would take again.

Rick is unbiasedly the best teacher at the college that I've had, and I've had most of them. He does the most writing exercises out of any teacher I've had, and his marking inspires you to fix what went wrong and where. He's also very caring about his students.

If you want to learn to write well, he is the instructor for you. If you want a mindless bird class, this is not for you.

Rick is an accomplished writer with a professional demeanor as a professor. He is funny. His classes are generally relaxed, but he is not afraid to call out people who are being disruptive (e.g. talking too loudly or texting when they should be paying attention). Right on, Rick!

I like Rick and his class is fun. Unfortunately, his marking is extremely harsh. He tells us to give positive feedback to classmates, but he doesn't have much nice to say in writing and doles out bad grades way too easily. I don't expect easy A's in creative writing, but giving people failing grades on completed assignments is not encouraging.

Rick is an extremely caring prof. He treats the students as equals and is a fair marker. He provides a lot of feedback but values workshops and participation. From the start he emphasizes on participation to get a good mark so be sure to vocally express your opinion. I would recommend to anyone to take his class! You won't regret it!

Absolutely loved his class. He gets along with everyone & we all loved him. He is a fair marker, and gives a lot of grace for late assignments This class required a lot of reading, and participation is mandatory in every class. If you're not comfortable speaking out loud for participation, well then get ready to be pushed out of your comfort zone

Rick is obviously invested in his students and the subject which makes his class enjoyable. He offers great insight and criticism and is able to make you really care about writing. Funny guy with lots to say, a lot of discussion and reading for a creative writing class though. I met a cute girl in his class, so definitely recommended

He's very helpful during workshops and gives us very good feedback on our work. Participation matters in his class. He's very nice and listens carefully to what we have to say. We didn't use a textbook, we had a coursepack, but he also hands out readings..

One of the best profs I've encountered in my years of university and college. Will always be available for office hours. One of the rare profs who actually really seems to care about his students wellbeing.

really good teacher, hard class (you have to be sweet on revisions for EVERYTHING to remotely come close to a a-/a range mark... but i think crwr in gen is like that, not just w/ rick...anyhow, that's hard to do when ur juggling 4 other classes). Really nice guy, will really get you to edit hard for pearls anthology submissions

This is a fun class to take. Rick is usually laughing along with the rest of us at all of the jokes and such. There's a lot of reading and if you don't do it you're in trouble. The assignments are pretty broad. It's hard to get more than a B because you have no idea what he's looking for.

Awesome, fun, cute, adorable guy who is a very talented writer and teacher. I learned so much about writing style and how to develop my own voice. I was not afraid to express myself, and he is able to find good qualities in everyone's writing. He is very enthusiastic about writing and literature, very kind and patient with his students. Best prof

Rick is one of the best teachers I've ever had! He is so smart, creative, kind, funny, open-minded and empathetic. He's wonderful. His personal Narrative class is the best class I've ever taken and I've got 7+ years of university. I learned so much from him. He's kind to everyone. He's so great!

Rick is a pretty smart guy who helped me develop my writing ability. He not-only helps you on the technical things, but he suggests better plot-twists for your stories which makes them more fun to read AND write. He's a bit of a tough marker, as I was lucky to get higher than a B+, but he grants re-writes at the end of the semester. Thumbs up.

Rick is awesome, it's almost like he's just another student giving advice and joking around with the class. He knows what he's talking about, and is way more open minded than a couple other crwr profs at douglas. The Beige rock!
