While people tend to either LOVE or HATE Beamish, I was one of those lovers!! He lectures really well and helps make boring material engaging. He speaks clearly and at a good pace, is very knowledgeable and is always eager to answer questions after lecture. The course was not too hard at all and grading was very fair.

This class made me hate sociology. It was really boring and I missed half the lectures. Luckily, you don't have to, go to lecture, or read the textbook instead, they're the same thing. Then towards the end of the term he spent like 3 weeks on Bob Dylan and how great he is, instead of actually learning we just learned about his interests. So boring

I hated sociology so much but I love Beamish and would torture myself with another year of sociology just to have him again. He's funny and genuinely cares about his students and is just the absolute sweetest. An absolute genius and would definitely recommend the course because it's set up for you to do well even if you don't know some material

He is very intelligent but tends to speak to his class as if we already know the material. His lectures are very organized but he focusses too heavily on the previous lecture which makes the class fall behind in lectures. Overall, good professor.

I love Beamish!!! His lectures are so well done. Sitting in his lectures feels like viewing a Ted Talk. Brilliant man, well written textbook, thoughtful and engaging lectures. I never want to skip his class, but if you have to, he posts narrated lecture slides online. A literal angel.

His class is pretty froshguy-friendly. I mean, for example, his textbook(written by himself) really tried to relate Sociology to we Z generation's daily life; the first assignment and tutorial were pretty easy and introductory, too. (Not like some prof who just throw a 1000-word essay at our face as the first assignment: )

Professor Beamish is an all around swell guy. His textbooks can be a little dry and his style of lecturing may not be for everyone. However, he is a very approachable and attentive proff who really wants his students to do well. PARTICIPATE in tutorials, do the weekly reading activities, and go to all the exam review sessions. You too will get an A

Really good first year prof. He lays out everything he wants to discuss super clearly and it is continuous through the readings and lectures. Posts everything online and does a lot of exam review. It can be hard to do well on the research assignments, but the exams are straightforward. Might not be riveting all the time, but just a good prof.

Beamish is the most caring prof I've had. He shows genuine concern for his students, really wants them to succeed, and is overall super friendly. His projects all lead up to the final essay. He is brilliant - knows his material inside and out. Although his textbook is extremely boring, and his lectures aren't fun either, it's a decent class.

This class definitely is not the most interesting course content wise, but Beamish makes it more bearable. It's clear that he really cares about the content and wants to see people do well.

Professor Beamish is a gem. He is extremely intelligent so it is sometimes hard for him to simplify things. Lectures are not mandatory at all, he posts them all online and most of them just cover the readings. Textbook reading can be very dense and hard to understand. He is a great professor, but maybe not the right fit for an introduction course.

Comment:
Although his lecture is boring, Beamish is inspirational and approachable, always giving the most sincere answers and advices to your inquiries. The textbook, although whose language is sort of unclear, help you be aware and critical of the historical context of concepts we will learn later, which is more helpful than "one-sentence conclusions."

Beamish is really not meant to teach an entry level class. His lectures are pointless, and hard to follow and he makes you buy both of his books. Both of his books are frustrating and convoluted. Also; crab walking, mouth sounds and Marx.... so much Marx

Comment:
Beamish is very unclear in how he explains things. Lectures aren't necessary but if you go, pay attention to what he is saying. To do well on the exam, read the textbooks, find keywords, and do the practice quiz. Try and understand the key concepts. The textbooks are super confusing and can easily be simplified which is frustrating.

Comment:
His lectures are full of unrelated tangents and convoluted concepts. Doesn't help that he makes you buy 3 books that he either wrote or contributed to, all of which are brutal to read. I find that I understand the topics better when they're explained in other classes since first year arts classes are all pretty closely related.
