Comment:
He really doesn't talk about anything related to international security and the entire lecture is memorized, it's like he's giving a speech. It's still interesting but I didn't learn anything from lectures that was relevant. The books are mediocre. It's mostly interesting without any real substance. And it's too rehearsed.

Great professor, easy course. Goes off on tangents sometimes, but he will make you think. Take this, especially if you are an honors student.

Arkin is amazing. Attendance isn't mandatory, but going to class really helps, even though he posts the slides you need to go to get ALL the info. He's always willing to help. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. If he knows who you are and if you've done well on the paper he will take that into consideration while doing final grades.

Dr. ARkin was awesome. The lectures were a little confusing becuase they are scattered, but you can still get all the info from them. I would strongly recommend going to class and without a doubt put a lot of effort in the paper. He spends a lot of time disussing it, so he is looking for good work.

Great guy. Confusing at first but if you go to class and study it isn't bad. Put work into your paper, go to office hours, and show improvement and you'll be fine. I got a 78, 86, and 97 on the exams and got an A in the class. He really cares about teaching and while he does go on tangents, it makes it interesting. Just show up, read, and study.

How can anyone NOT like Arkin? Arkin has been the best professor I've had at OSU and the most helpful. I have never heard him "soapbox" about anything. Sounds like someone is bitter about doing poorly. Easy tests (assuming you GO TO CLASS and DO HW) and a friendly class atmosphere conductive to learning. I would def recommend Arkin for this class.

Arkin is great! He seems to really care about his students and is cheerful and friendly. There were well over 100 people in my class and he was still willing to edit everyone's paper prior to turn-in. I like his grading, too: he curves & gave me an A+ on a paper I probably did not deserve. I learned so much more because I didn't stress about grades

Miserable class. Course material is dry at best, and Arkin is insufferable. I am clueless as to why this is a required course for IS majors. Take this only if you want to hear someone soapbox about their political agenda, tenure, and family for two hours a day twice a week. Just awful.

He LOVES what he teaches and it really comes across in his lectures. If you are engaged, which it is not hard to be with him, you will do well in the class. He is very good about boosting your grade if you show improvement/work hard or the paper (2 page). Take any class he has! Awesome guy!

MOST AWFUL PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. DO NOT take this class with him if you can avoid it. You have to read both books if you want any information at all about anything. He rants about nothing all class and tries to shove 3-4 lectures into the last class to make up for it. Tests are hard and poorly written. Bottom line he is awful.

It is striking that a tenured professor would yammer his way through a REQUIRED class as he does. MANY personal references are made during class, relating to nothing and provide no accent to the material. I do not recommend this class. I hope the department head soon replaces him as primary instructor of this course, as others and I have recommende

He does talk a lot about his life, but it is all interesting stuff. He talks about his tenure a lot, but he is clearly joking. Very interesting guy who has been doing this for a long time. Class not really relevant for IS majors, but still very interesting class. I recommend!!

By far one of the best professors I've ever had. Sure, he rants a lot during class, but he has good ways of teaching. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. It helps so much. When he sees you putting a lot of effort into the class he'll take that into consideration for the final grade, especially if you've come to office hours.

Thought it would be random, but turned out to be great. Read the books, they are on the exam but not in the lecture. If you memorize the slide materials you will ace the exams. Choose a good topic for the paper, and you will get an easy A. you cant scrape by in this class. its 500 level so you need to put alot of effort in. and it will pay off.

He always randomly talks about his family and how he has tenure so he can talk about whatever he wants. It took us 4 lectures to get through the first ppt presentation. Tests are on all of the reading, not much at all from lectures. Books are interesting, but I didn't learn anything new. I also didn't learn anything about personal security.

Always late to class, yet visibly gets irritated when others come in late. Goes on 15 minute revelries about things he remembers in his own life, often coming back to lecture topics having forgotten what he was talking about. I dont know why this class is required for IS majors. 80% of material is covered in other courses most of us take.
