Very nice and understanding professor. However, a very boring class. The class that I was in, was literally just him talking for 2.5 hours. The discussions had almost nothing to do with the essays that we had to write, and every time he describes someone he doesn't like they are "Right wing" Pushes his political opinions into every lecture.

Warning if you don't have time to read find a different class. I'm a history major and I was overwhelmed at times with the amount of information and concepts thrown at me. If you do have time to read though it can be a fun and enjoyable class. Attendance isn't mandatory but it helps. He's also super understanding if you miss class for an emergency.

Horrible Professor. Read about a book a week, do a five page report on it. The last day of class he gives us a prompt for a 12 page report about the entire quarter's work, no warning. Constantly complains about right wing politics and America can do no right. I am forever grateful that I will never have to take a class from this professor again.

Full on lecture class but has a lot of real interesting history. He provides a lot of context leaving you prepared for the essays he wants you to write. He's really big on class led discussions and won't press on a topic if you don't speak up. You have to work for you answers but an amazing guy.

I completely enjoyed having Dr. Dean. He is an excellent Historian who is deeply knowledgeable. If you have any issues with the context and understanding it or any outside problems he is really understanding. He helped me find a great counselor while I was dealing with the death of two loved ones at the same time. Read, take notes during discussion

This professor was helpful and insightful. Although his lectures can be a tad bit boring, the truth is is that it is a lecture hall so he HAS to lecture. he has you read a couple books, but I enjoyed them all. He has three essays and the final is a take home essay. He really is a nice guy and if you have any questions he is super helpful..

Dean knows what he is talking about but if you don't enjoy long lectures I would not take this class. He can be kind of boring and is strict when it comes to being late and being on your phone. I did learn a lot but did fall asleep a few times. He does not use canvas either which I do not like. Overall he was an okay professor.

Dean was is an older guy that has very specific views on how he sees history. The coarse as a whole is boring, you probably learned most of this stuff in high school. The only thing other than being 2-12 hours of hell, I didn't know my grade the whole quarter. I guess using canvas was to much ask after i take thousands of dollars out in loans!

Read the books that are assigned and write papers that includes your own thoughts; don't just write book reports. The books that he assigns are interesting. If you don't agree with Dr. Dean's point of view, state your position but only if you are ready for criticism.

Dr. Dean chose great books for the class. I appreciate the effort that he put into helping me figure out the relevance of various sources. There was confusion in the class but I think that is because Dr. Dean thinks out-loud. If you have a thin skin take another class, if you are ready to learn and aren't offended by crass criticism take Dean!

I don't think that he is mean, but he defiantly shares his own opinion. You have to read 4 different books and then write 5+ page essays on them. But you'll be fine if you don't read any of the book, just be sure to take good notes! He goes over exactly what the chapter says anyway. He will lecture for an hour or more, which kind of sucks.

Quite possibly one of the most rude people I have ever met. Constantly berated me for "daring" to contradict him or point out inaccuracies in his lectures. Hates Bush. Hates conservatives. Hates America most days. Do yourself a favor, don't take his classes. Other departmental instructors will benefit you more.

This guy is probably the most rude professor I have ever had! Never take him if you can help it. All he did was decry America every class and talk about how conservatives are basically sub-human. He hates anyone who disagrees with his ideas and has some serious passive aggressive issues with America

Dean is exorbitantly long winded and takes fifteen minutes to answer a simple question. While he tries to be helpful he just ends up confusing everyone. He is very disillusioned with life and tries to discourage everyone from pursuing history. He also loves to shoot people's ideas down, only to make the same point five minutes later.

Excellent instructor, really knows his stuff! It was a bit distracting having immature students who weren't prepared for college level work leaving in the middle of the class (definitely their loss). I really enjoy this subject matter/was impressed with the extent of his knowledge and how he can keep all the time periods straight the way he does!
