Best class I've ever taken, with the best professor I've ever had. Holmes changed my outlook on life. His philosophy of nonviolence class was amazing, and he even brought Gandhi's grandson in to speak to us. It was mind-blowing. Some classes you take for a requirement, and some you take for your personal passions. This class was my passion.

Dr. Holmes is a great professor. He takes a different approach to teaching and learning in that he uses divergent thinking ( more than 1 right answer). He is passionate in how he teaches the courses and cares about what we get out of it. Those of you who think he is boring, are probably taking the course for the wrong reasons.

This is perhaps one of the most amazing class I've taken. Dr. Holmes is passionate in how he addresses certain issues and makes them interesting. Probably the nicest, most personable professor I've ever taken a class with. Take a class with him, it could be life changing..

Passionate, intelligent and charming. Extremely approachable, like the grandfather you never had. Extensive knowledge of ethical and political theory, especially nonviolence and anarchist theory. Probably the only professor in the department that doesn't shy away from continental or eastern schools of thought.

Comment:
PHL 102 is a frustratingly, demoralizingly easy course. Holmes is a very patient, careful, and effective lecturer, but he tends to repeat himself a little too often. Also he pronounces 'Kant' like 'Can't', which was really difficult for me.

Holmes is a great teacher! Many students claim he is boring, but that is because they have no interest in the topic.Holmes is really enthusiastic about the course, and is always willing to help you understand the concepts. just study hard, because he doesn't curve grades :(

Everyone thinks he's amazing, but I think he's very overrated. Some of the class was really interesting (particularly the part about sexism), though I know he changes the material. It's a pretty interesting class for the most part.

. THis class will change or at least open your mind to strategic nonviolence and the power which it holds. If you dont take this class i truely feel sorry for you. Also, if you are in the rotc program you must take this class before you decide to become a professional solidger, you could be making a mistake.

Great professor. The best philosophy professor in the department. He is unbiased, intelligent, and encourages participation. Very soothing voice so it can be easy to fall asleep. But try not to.. because he makes you think. Definitely would take him again.

This guy is great to watch and listen to. He somehow manages to learn the names of a number of students in such a large class, and he never makes anybody feel stupid. He encourages participation, and IS VERY GOOD LOOKING FOR AN OLDER MAN. Easy grader too.

Like the first comment said, 116Q made me decide to be a philosophy major. He's not only a great professor but also an admirable man. I liked that the readings didn't go hand in hand with lecture.
