In my opinion... The most ineffective teacher I have ever taken at the University. He emphasizes memorization of every period and comma. Mathews is an example of the fallout of tenure. I am not insulting him as a person... one on one he's fine... DO NOT TAKE! I am an A student... again.. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS FROM HIM!

Tests meant giving verbatim definition of dozens of music terms. Grades on curve: I had class high grade, until 30-min piano and recorder recital test, after the 3-hr written final. Piano test meant playing a song, while tapping the beat with one foot, while naming the notes ("do-mi-fa-re"). Nice guy, poor teacher, insanely hard for 3 credit GenEd.

RUN AWAY! this class kills a GPA and mental stability like little else I've ever experenced. bad lectures & HORRENDIS tests that leave you wanting to curl up in a corner and die. get out while you can or better yet: DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING WITH THIS MAN. YOU'LL THANK YOURSELF LATER. really!

he's a really nice guy, but the class is ridiculously hard. you have to memorize all your notes. his grading system is weird though, so even failing all the tests, i'm passing with a c. i wouldn't reccomend it though unless you have a photographic memory.

wow, this guy super seriously sucks. If you value your education you wont take this guy. He's a freaking moronic idiot. He isn't helpful at all and doesn't make the info clear at all. You have to study like crazy just to fail. He informs you at the beginning of class that half of the students will fail. He SUCKS!!

One word - TERRIBLE! I CANNOT believe they allowed him to continue teaching that long. For each exam he would distribute a blank sheet of paper to each student and have them re-write EVERY word, semicolon, and comma from memory. Literally PAGES of memorization. RIDICULOUS!
