IRRESPLACEABLE. Had the pleasure of being a part of his last CHM 260 course before he retired. I left his class with so much knowledge on not only chemistry, but the world and how chemistry plays a role in everything. I truly feel sad that he won't be teaching anymore and I wish more teachers were like him and encouraged deeper thinking.

Dr. Stach was the first professor I ever had, and his style of teaching prepared me for every other class I took throughout my career. Indirectly, he will teach you to filter out useless information to find what you really need to know- this has become an increasingly valuable skill, the perfection of which I must credit Dr. Stach.

He tries to scare students at the beginning of the semester, and you will find out that hes a softy. Test are either take home or you get a practice test which is almost identical to the actual test. He is willing to help on the test too. The curve on each test is HUGE. I really dont know how you could do bad in this class if you are actually TRYING

Comment:
Dr. Stach is the complete opposite to what an intro to chemistry professor should be. He assumes that you already have a PhD in the subject. He consistently goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the course subject while lecturing. I am a CHM major and have taken CHM classes before and I honestly can say I have lost knowledge of the subject.

Comment:
Dr. Stach is a main contributor to the general unpreparedness of chemistry students throughout this University. His classes, far from promoting individual thinking and application of course material, focus mainly on the arbitrary topics that he wishes to discuss on that day. He is a detriment to this establishment, and should be actively avoided.

Comment:
Dr. Stach spends more time on a political soapbox than covering course material in his classes. His attitude toward students in the classroom is condescending: If he asks you a question and you answer correctly, more will follow until he proves to everyone in the room that he is smarter than his students.

I hated his elitist attitude, which bleeds over into grading. Because of the tremendous curve, I always felt I was in a competitive atmosphere. It wasn't about academic integrity, it was about becoming fluent with the test problems. Ironic considering his stance on memorization. Taught me the value of studying on my own. Office hours always packed.

Fantastic professor. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and learned a lot. My only regret is not taking the full year Biochem course with Stach. His teaching style is helpful for the MCAT; the material he teaches shows up over and over on the MCAT. One of the best professors in the country. I found his teaching style very relevant to grad school.

I don't know if it's Stockholm Syndrome or what, but I love Dr. Stach. I haven't learned one thing about chemistry, but would agree with him that it is my fault. I hope I never have to take another of his classes, but would love to hang out with him some time. Read the book and go to study sessions/his office. GOOD LUCK! You'll need it!

Take home tests take about 30 hours and then you get a C. He is very charismatic, but would do better in PoliSci, unless of course his classes were full of mathematical geniuses & they pull the math right out of their asses and apply it to theory with no instruction. DON'T TAKE HIM. I got A's in ALL of my other science courses- even Genetics.

Smartest person in the world, unfortunately doesn't know how to get his message across. Very funny, but I did not learn anything from him. Mrs. Ion took over second half therefore I learned some things. I was still getting a B when he left but not because I learned anything.

Great prof! He truly cares about his students past and present (I graduated in '01 and am still in contact). He's always willing to help and, yes, his tests are challenging, but that's what college is for. If you go to lecture, study the text, and use your brain, it's not too difficult and you learn enough to go on to grad school.

If I can avoid it, I will not be taking him ever again. Tests are so hard he gives them to you a week in advance to prepare, but the class average is still below 50%. I will probably leave the class not knowing much more than when I entered it.

Very hard class. Very, very hard tests. You have to be a good problem solver and get in a good group to do well on his take-home group tests. If you get stuck, he will help steer you in the right direction. Very friendly. Very passionate animated lectures, though they have little to do with the material!

Great teacher, very smart but tests are tough. As others have said you need to get with a group and go to him for help otherwise you won't do well in this class unless you're a genius.

Very interesting to listen to at times. He loves talking about statin drugs. Tests are difficult, get with a group, it makes it a lot easier. He makes you think and just wants you to learn. Easy to talk to and very helpful.

There are group exams, but they make you feel like you haven't learned a thing. The examples he provides are so confusing, especially pH. He also expects you to understand it in record time, which is not possible in chemistry. Our group did get an A, but only b/c we had a very strong student to do the exams. Overall, I feel like I learned nothing!!
