Comment:
Rolf was such a cool guy. He is a big history buff, so his class is more centered around history rather than philosophy, which is a change from regular SF classes. He definitely doesn't pretend to like people who are terrible/clearly uninterested, however.

I was really disappointed in this class. The class, from the syllabus to the lectures, was unorganized. Refuses to give As. Often made inappropriate comments about grades and even sometimes race to students in front of the entire class.

Since it's a history course, I asked him to clarify some of the content and he told me to wiki it. So, don't take him if you don't like wikipedia.

Possibly the best professor I've ever had here. Super interesting and super passionate, and his cynical sense of humor makes the class interesting.

I like history lectures but if you don't, you probably shouldn't take him. His papers aren't so hard. You have to pick your own topic. Try not to pick a boring, overdone topic. I think he grades fairly but I definitely got grades slightly lower than I'm used to. His exams aren't too hard. You'll do well if you take good notes and study them.

Take him if you are good with memorizing dates and facts. He's definitely more of a historian than a regular teacher. He gives out reasonable essay grades, but he is really HARSH on exams!!! Make sure you AVOID him if you are not 100% into the topics or if you don't study a lot on a daily basis. OVERALL a good teacher, clear and interesting.

Direct guy-doesn't listen to BS. Also, don't be late or he'll get pissed. Very good professor. If you're more of a history type like me than a philosophy type, then I strongly recommend him for SF. Interesting stories, and overall a fine historian.

He's a great professor with high standards. You get what you put in.Make sure to include a diverse set of resources for your papers other than that he's not very clear what he wants in a paper. He doesn't like to specify what's on the exams because he believes you should know as much as you can which makes sense bec its a history class.GO ROLFIE!

Worst teacher I have ever had. Biggest narcissist at NYU. He does not enjoy using textbooks, since he didn't write them. Claims he doesn't give A's because he's not that kind of teacher. I wrote a phenomenal 10-page paper, where he only corrected a date and commented "great paper on a difficult topic." and gave me a B+. AVOID at all costs!!

BRILLIANT! Definitely not the easiest class, but if you work hard, study, and participate, it will be one of the most rewarding classes you take in LSP. He's a wealth of fascinating knowledge and extremely fair and approachable. You have to go to class to do well, but the classes are often so interesting you don't mind. Take him!

teaches history, good teacher, only lectures though... dry and hard to hear unless you sit upfront and pay close attention. make sure he learns your name so participate often. only tests are the midterm and final. hard but not so bad if you study. by the end of the class i liked him but i had to stay dedicated to get a good grade

Very intelligent. His sarcasm lights up the lectures. He didn't give any homework the whole semester. Just two papers of your own topic and the normal midterm/final. They're easy if you pay attention to everything he says. Be careful with the papers because the guy knows everything and can easily prove you wrong. He doesnt like kiss ups.

Begins his sentences with loudly but his voice gradually fades until he mumbles. he often diverges into tangents during class. when you answer a question he asks he will interrupt you during your explanation because he mistakes that you are telling the wrong answer. his grading is unfair and it is unclear what he wants.

Had him for Social Foundations 1 and 2. Soc 1 was boring, soc 2 the lectures became more interesting. A LOT of reading. Has favorites. Grades really hard on papers. 2 large papers, midterm, final. Not clear on what he wants. Clearly does not like americans

If you're a history buff, this guy is for you. I thought his lectures were pretty good, and he knows his stuff. However, he is tough; there were a number of students in my class who struggled through the whole semester. If history isn't your thing, try to find another class.

I happen to really like him. I didn't at first, but he really grew on me. I wouldn't necessarily recommend him to people because he takes a while to get used to, and grades rather hard on tests (but pretty easy on papers) but if you want to learn something solid in class, and are willing to put in the work and participate, then he is for you.

I had him for Social Foundations II and his Nazi Germany seminar. I was a bit thrown off by all the negative comments he's gotten on here. He's a very nice guy, does not grade that harshly and tends to have pretty interesting lectures.

I had him for topics in modern society, soldiers returning from way. He is a good guy. Doesn't take class that serious and is more focused on discussions than strict syllabuses. If you put in a genuine effort he will give you a good mark. Definitely would take his class again.
