Prof Rumbaut is a great person, but wow the man is boring. The class is 3 hours long but attending is not mandatory. You'll learn more from the discussions and the readings so I highly recommend doing so if you want to pass. Study the vocab from the "Race in Society" text and the midterm will be a breeze. The course consists of 1 midterm & 1 final.

This class can best be described as a waste of time. The professor is incompetent, but you'll pass if you read the book.

The structure is this: but the book and then teach it. He divides the reading of both books and various articles to the class to report. Before each group reports he rambles about the latest world events. He basically defines the world as being ignorant and his teachings to triumph all. During presentations he is ver disruptive, interjecting and rambling for large amounts of time while groups stand up there silent. There is 0 flow to the course and nobody can produce a linear report interruption

This class is incredibly difficult but if you put in the word and do the readings there is no reason why you wont get an A. You really dont realize how useful this class is until it's done with. It's one of the only classes on campus where you can take the knowledge learned and apply it to the future. Discussions are mandatory if you expect to pass

Very interesting class. Prof is very nice and enthusiastic but his lectures are very hard to focus on (esp in an evening class). He is of the old school--no slides, lectures from handwritten notes on legal pad. He has AMAZING TA's so GO to discussion and read the books and you will do fine. Tests are very fair if you do the work.

First off this class is very hard but interesting at the same time. There's one midterm and one final. Going to discussion and lecture is mandatory if you expect to pass this class, especially discussion. I had no interest in this class at all but I got a A+. Do the readings (about 600 pages) and go to discussions and your good for an A. TA is awes

Rumbaut is clearly passionate about what he's teaching, which makes the lectures fairly interesting. The issue is that he goes on major tangents, and it's often unclear what things he says are actually important. If you go to discussions and do the readings, the class is an acceptably easy A.

First off, he is passionate and knows about what he teaches. However, due to his enthusiasm, his lectures are very vague, and he often go off topic.(and 40% of tests are based on lecture) Also, there are monumental amount of reading. (Close to 1000 pages) Very dry lectures and difficult tests (never the simple ones from the books) Avoid if you can.

I thought this class would be hard but it reality it wasn't. Midterm was based on terms from text. He gives extra credit paper of 15 points which you get just by doing the paper. My TA,Amber Tierney, was VERY helpful. Go to her Discussion! Prof curves your grade. I got a B in the class!

OMG. so monotone that lecture will kill you. He is very dry and the material on the quizzes/final is so random from his lecture. He will emphasize certain questions, like maybe 5, then the other 70 questions are really hard ones from the reading and lecture.

Absolutely horrible. I attended the first three lectures because I wanted to just pass the class. But that will to go died off cuz he's so boring and he gets off topic... so you don't get much help from lectures. Discussions are better than lectures. There are too many readings... 300pages in 5 week, and for around 600+ pages for 10weeks. BORING!!!

He's really passionate and interested in the subject he's teaching. But because he's so passionate he rambles and gets off topic. It's important to read cause he's so monotone that it's hard to pay attention. Sit in front and you'll be able to focus.

It could get boring, but i found his lectures interesting. Most of the readings are whats on the test but many students did not read and still passed with a decent grade. EASY CLASS. Curves generously. You could do poorly on the midterm and final and just do the essay without going to class and still get C

He is so boring and confusing. He talks about random things unrelated to the class. The readings were long and tedious and the tests were honestly common sense. Discussions are not mandatory, but they're useful for understanding the important concepts of the class. The term paper was really easy.

He may get off topic, but overall, everything he talks about relates to the big picture. His passion shows through his lectures; he really knows his stuff. Exams depend on TAs writing it. Do all readings and attend lectures, and you'll get an A.

I loved this man's class. everyone is complaining because they just don't want to do the work. yes there is a lot of reading, but it's fairly interesting and it's easy to go through. this is college, so you have to do the work, but it isn't impossible. he is such a nice man who is genuine and has a good heart.

This man is so boring. He will ramble about his stories which might or might not be interesting. I don't know because they always put me to sleep. Never went to class and still pulled a B. The final was easy as was his research paper.
