By George, Murphree's OChem is the type of class that makes you realize that you need to up your game. Most people will fail the first exam (myself included); don't be discouraged! If you put in the time by going to office hours and course consultants, you'll get the hang of things, get an A, and Bob's your uncle.

I really like Dr. Murphree. a nice man. However, there is absolutely 100% no need to take o chem with him, no matter what your major is or post-grad plans are. He makes it too hard. You're going to break your back over it. it's not worth it. Save ur GPA +time.O CHEM IS COOL but he ruins the fun with the stress

Murph gives the toughest exams, expects the most, and is the most intimidating professor to take ochem with, but if you're willing to put in the necessary time (which for me was at least 15 hrs/week), you will know ochem SO well, especially for the MCAT. Despite the difficulty (which may hurt your GPA), I'd recommend him, bc he's a fantastic prof.

Prof. Murphree knows his stuff. I really enjoyed taking his class as it's the only class I fully pay attention in, however not going to lie, this class did take a toll on my GPA. However I do know the material... Think carefully if you value your GPA or if you value knowledge, if you're going to take this class.

Beware that he is a harsh grader and his class is extremely difficult! However, you will know your chemistry and probably score high on the MCAT or GRE. I recommend his class for the dedicated chemistry major. If he sees that you are working hard via a positive trend in tests, he may increase your grade.

Very tough grader and fairly condescending. I hated asking questions because he seemed to expect you to know already even though you're asking the question! Not very lenient with make up work or trying to reschedule a test due to unexpected complications.

Dr. Murphree is one of those professors that many students attempt to avoid due to the notion that his class is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. And you know what? It is. However, this shouldn't stop any dedicated chemistry major from taking his class. He is by far one of the most talented, and overall knowledgeable professors that Allegheny has to offer.

Ochem with Murphree was definitely the most difficult thing I've ever done but it was a great learning experience. If you love chemistry and really want to dive into the hard stuff then take him. If you care too much about your GPA then don't take him.

Vague lectures. Extremely difficult labs. He makes it close to impossible to receive a B in his class and I don't know anyone who actually got an A. He is a nightmare for anyone who is premed, avoid like the plague. Murphree is also very intellectually intimidating at times when you approach him during study hours. Also, the discussions...

Murphree is the most intelligent person I have ever met and now he's my advisor! I love him and this class! But if you see Murphree on your schedule start mentally preparing yourself for a major GPA hit now. If you value that 4.0 you're in the wrong class.

Dr. Murphree is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. Very passionate about his field and hopes to invoke that passion in his students. That being said, the material he tests on is 40 times harder than example problems/workshop/homework and i put all of my time and effort into his class. helpful for mcat i hear, but its way over my head

Murphree is a genius, but do not take his class if you value your grade point average. He is a very nice person, and VERY knowledgeable, but he expects mastery and is very strict with pretty much everything. He explains O Chem well, but there is NO reiteration. You either understand everything immediately or live outside his office.

Dr. Murphree is a great teacher. He is easily one of the best ochem professors in the country. His notes are very clear and are very helpful when preparing for the mcats. He is always available for meetings and many office hours and is very helpful in one on one sessions. His tests are extremely hard but they prepare you for the future.

My class did horrible on the first few tests. They were long and required different modes of thinking (visual manipulations of organic molecules) than other courses. Make sure you know the workshops, they were very helpful on the exams (especially the final). Class was very difficult! But I felt like I knew organic chemistry by the final.

Pro. Murphree is a chem genius, but obviously didn't start out a teacher. Class notes are useless when studying for tests because his lectures ramble so much, his tests had probelms way harder than anything you've ever done in class or on homework. I wouldn't recommend him

Makes o chem a five day a week class with lab and workshop. Expects you to do reading and answer clicker questions correctly. Helpful when it comes to questions on material, but is vague when it comes to lab reports. he is a strict grader but gives a lot of partial credit. Gives you a good understanding of the subject, while kicking your butt.

One of the hardest classes I've taken at Allegheny, hands down. Your life will revolve around ochem, but he prepares you SO much for tests like the MCAT. He's incredibly helpful, a great lecturer, and amazingly organized. One of the best profs here, but by far one of the hardest profs here. Would recommend!!
