You could teach yourself, she basically hands you the textbook and tells you to do all the exercises. Not the best help for learning the language. tests almost every week, but they are fairly easy.

Chen Laoshi is extremely helpful, caring and sweet. She cares about her students, and about their progress in Chinese. Her class is a lot of work, but if you put the work in, the tests are very fair, and she tends to grade fairly easy. I highly recommend taking her class--I wasn't interested in Chinese at all, but after taking her class, I loved it

Chen is a horrible professor. I've taken two classes with her, and neither time have I learned anything (and believe me, I try). Her grading is completely based on her own opinions of things, so if you don't agree with her, you'll get marked down for it. Her lectures are slow, repetitive, quiet, and go in circles. She also goes off topic a lot.

she's a sweet lady but her lectures for CSP are super boring. avoid if possible, it's not going to be a HARD class but she grades based on her own opinions (so if she doesn't agree with a statement you make she'll mark you down) and is just kinda ridiculous like that.

Professor Chen is a sweetie and really wants her students to succeed. She teaches Chinese well but has a hard time controlling the class sometimes. She's not too hard and not too easy. A fine teacher overall for Chinese.
