Comment:
Prof Sernau is knowledgeable about what he is teaching but sometimes classes do not have much direction. The quizzes are all multiple choice and fairly easy. Then you have a book review paper to do which is pretty interesting. You are also required to do a service learning project and volunteer somewhere. Overall it's not a bad class.

He is extremely knowledgeable, and he mixed textbook activities with videos, current events, and projects. Clear and very organized. Not an easy class but very rewarding.

Comment:
The entire course was only worth 200 points. There were 3 quizzes and 2 papers. One paper had to be around 8 pages and was only worth 40 points. The other paper was about 5 pages and worth 20 points. Professor Sernau is a fun guy and does a lot to keep class interesting. Other than that, I don't recommend taking his anthropology course.

Unclear about what he wanted in class. Stupid project and boring lectures. Watched videos most. Only thing I learned was from reading Jonathon Kozol's book.

Good professor. Is interested in molding well-rounded students and tries hard not to make the class more than just a boring lecture and one or two papers. There's lots of videos and encouragement to do 'outside' work that pertains so the class material. Very active on campus and a huge asset to IUSB for sure.

AWESOME Professor. Highly suggest to others. Understanding and easy to complete assignments. Has a way to make up work and get extra credit. As long as you study for the tests and prepare for the tests you will do fine. Great teacher.

Is too dependent on videos and class discussion when conducting his class/course. Needs to lecture more. Dependent on short to medium length (2 - 6 pages long) writing assignments. Gives quizzes (4 - 6), too. Also, offers additional/extra credit opportunties.

Personally an okay kind of guy. Relies on too many writing assignments which add nothing to learning th actual subject. Tests are multiple choice.

Took during a six week summer session. Barely lectured. Had a field trip and short paper based on it due every class period in addition to a medium (visual/pictoral) paper. Had discussions based on our field trips. Saw video(s) every class period.

Now this is a great teacher...he makes you look at social aspects in a very different light. Very helpful and he expects alot of his students. He's not afraid to get in there and do the dirty work. A+!!!

I thought his class was thought provoking. Volunteer work didn't really pertain to the final paper, but overall he's an easy A if you attend class and do the readings.
