He assigns very long and difficult homework. He is very nice though, and always willing to help his students. I would only take his VHDL class if you have a veerry light class load. The homeworks and projects will steal your life.

Ridiculous. The is supposed to be an introductory class and I felt like I should have already had an undergraduate degree in computer engineering. He really is a nice guy, but he just goes way to fast and is way to advanced to be teaching this intro course. Very unforgiving grader.

Hardest class I've had after 70 hours at UMR. Way too hard for an "Intro" class. Smith is masterful in his subject--so smart he doesn't realize how little his students understand. Tests are tricky, homework is ridiculously long and difficult, and to top it off, he's a hard grader. He's a great guy & can be helpful, but his class is overkill.

Assigned frustratingly complex, time consuming, and expensive project, in addition to homework and tests (no other class had to do a project). HALF of total class points are only available in last two weeks of semester. Helpful in office hours, but it's frustrating to have to attend them in order to complete anything he assigns.

Do not take VHDL as an undergrad! You will spend your life in the Sun Lab. The homework and design projects are insanely hard. In fact, one homework is the equivalent to a semester project in another class. In addtion, he is one the the hardest graders on campus. You have been warned.

He is a nice guy, but a tough one when it comes to tests. His Homeworks and tests are actually good, but tough to work alone :-) His Projects are bit tough too. He is very knowledgeable in NCL. I would rate him among the best in UMR.
