I will warn that this professor has made his class a challenge, but English is my favorite class so this was a fun challenge. You do get 6 papers and they're all interesting topics. The lectures in class were also interesting to listen to; I really liked them and found them to be interesting. Don't take this if you wont won't work for your grade!

Comment:

This professor is a great lecturer. He explains everything and gives awesome feedback. The only problem with the class is that it gets monotonous. Doing the same thing over and over can be a good way to learn, but after awhile it needs to be changed up. There's only so much you can get out of repetition.

I wouldnt say he is a terrible professor but taking this class right out of highschool is truly painful. I've always been pretty confident in my writing but this dude totally rips at your self esteem. He's alright but definitely not enjoyable.

the most enjoyable class I have had so far. He really gets you into the class, I was tempted to change my engineering major to English major after taking his class. he will make you work though, and loves to read so be ready to read yourself. He is a great teacher who, I believe, could have been so much more.

I thought I was good at writing essays, but when i got my first essay score (67%) I knew he was going to be a tough grader. He's kind and cares about his students and i should've gone to the writing when i needed. If you are lazy i suggest looking for a different professor or picking up your game.

I absolutely thought I was good at english, but after taking this class I have learned so much. He's very passionate, and some might disagree but he's such an intelligent human being. He has a great mind and it was always a pleasure to show up for this class. It has really improved my writing. So bummed he's retiring! Definitely recommend next sem.

I'm usually good at english, but in this class it's either his way or an F. I understand he sees potential in his students but he can be a smartass towards them. He gives opportunity to fix essays, but to fix them you basically have to re-do it all as if it is your first time with the essay subject.

Said this in my review for his B50 course,& I'll say it again: Scott Wayland is one of the most quality professors I've had. Course material always addresses important societal issues, so you always learn more than just English. He will challenge you to your fullest potential; but if you're willing to learn, you'll flourish. Wayland's a class act.

Took B50 and B1A, both times got a B when I'm typically an A student - especially in English. But he's a great professor, he graded me hard because he sees potential in his students. Don't take his class IF YOU'RE LAZY. True academic experience. Reading is somewhat boring, but class is funny and enjoyable. My writing is 100x better.

What most people say is true, Wayland is an extremely tough grader. However he is a great professor & I understand why he's tough the way he is. It was tough, but he helps out in every way possible. For a true college academic experience, I would recommend his class. If you are lazy & looking for an easy way out, do not take him. Simple.

Honestly a great professor. Of course you have to work for your grade, this is college after all. I really enjoy going to his class since he does not make it boring. I definitely recommend, however just remember that you need to actually work.

He is the worst professor I have ever taken for English! He is also very RUDE! I recommend to not take if you enjoy coming to school or taking more than at least 12 units! The only thing I like about him is that he will help if you ask but if you don't your screwed! He is also a very harsh grader!

Harsh grader, not an easy class ! If you are bad with English this is not the class to take . He is very strict and if you miss 3 days he will drop you. Expects for you to be a quick learner. Also he takes forever to reply to an email. I do not recommend him.

I started-out wanting to be an English teacher, now midway through the class, I want to change my major. This professor thinks that his is the only class you are taking. He is a harsh grader, and never admits fault or error. He's passive-aggressive and makes me dread coming to his class, when I usually enjoy my classes. Overall I wouldn't recommend

I am fairly good at this subject and this class kicked my ass! he is very interesting, harsh grader. you read papers in front of the class and grade others. i had a few mental breakdowns but came out with a B.( i was unhappy with it) overall he pushes you to do your best

This class is indeed a lot of work. Don't take more than 12 units and you'll do fine. He is very interesting with a great attitude and high energy. He allows two essays to be rewritten for a higher grade. I truly learned how to become an accomplished writer by taking his coarse. Highly recommend.

This class was a lot of work. I do not mind the work. I do not recommend this class to people who need extra help. You will not get the help you need. My emails are never returned, and when I try to see teacher during office hours I am turned away. I am getting along fine, but I can see how it might be a problem for people who need extra help.
