Overall, he's great. He's 100% deaf so he takes signing SERIOUS so if you're looking for an ASL 1/2 teacher then maybe take someone else. BUT, if you're going to 3 and 4 you will be with him so get ready. He's a bit unorganized because he teaches a million classes, but as long as you talk to him he will help you. He's intimidating, but he's nice.

toughest professor ever, he wants you to learn about topics that will benefit future teachers to students who don't have that major, no compassion, he made me take ASL 3 twice and ASL 4 twice and I'm willing to change my major to not take him again, he's the only one who teaches 3 and 4, need more professors to teach, he's inconsistent

Comment:

Dr. Whitney is pretty great if you are looking to immerse yourself into sign language. I had him for Level 1 and because I had some past ASL knowledge it was pretty easy. However, he is completely voice off and tries to fully get the students to only sign in class. I liked him, but he is tough for very beginners.

Very passionate, and if you want to increase your signing ability take him. He is picky but it makes for a stronger signer. Very funny and relaxed. The work load is a lot. Gives great feedback, and is available outside of class to help. Is disorganized but as long as you continuously ask and double check what he wants, he will tell you.

At first the class structure was confusing, but as time went on it got easier. The book is heavily used. He was clear to me, but I cannot speak for everyone. He was very helpful. If this class is required for your major then work hard and always ask for help!

Class/$900, Books/$120, GoReact account/$20= $1040. Sorry Mac users the study tool only works on Windows. On top of that class is rough. Penalizes you for using your voice. Meanwhile we are learning why it was so bad when deaf kids were penalized when they sign. I'm an SFA scholar student and I still came out with a low "B". Class is not worth it.

He can not teach. Do not take HIS class, he is too obsessed with technology to even be able to get a test ready for the class. if you want to learn watch a sesame street episode with sign language, that is about how much you will learn from him. he will confuse you and destroy any confidence you had in signing.

Worst teacher you will ever have. Changes syllabus without telling students so deadlines are hard to keep us with. First C I've ever received in college and I had to work for it. Very hard to communicate with. Has no problem calling people out in class. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELFF!!!! take another language if he's the only one that is available.

Dr Whitney is amazing! He will go out of his way to help you succeed, but if you are not putting your effort into it, he will not help. He is my favorite teacher and by far the best teacher I have ever had at sfa!

Do not take him for ASL II unless you like challenges and/or getting C's, D's, or F's. I don't know anyone who WANTS to get below a B, so take someone else if you can help it. He is very hard and not all that helpful - he often got frustrated with me when I genuinely needed help.

Ok yeah, I know, his class is hard. But its well worth it if you actually want to know ASL. Professor Whitney is deaf, and he requires the use of ASL for communication. You can write to talk to him, but he prefers to be signed to (you are in an ASL class).He is really helpful and wants you to actually learn his language. use office hours.

Wonderful teacher. Funny and intersting. Very passionate and loves participation from students. He will respect you more for it. MUST attend class or you WILL be lost! He's very good at explaining the signs.

Scott is a great prof and he really wants you to understand the language and sign well. He is very helpful and almost always available to help, practice, make things more clear, etc. He's a great prof, and I wish he taught ASL 3 and 4 as well.

Prof. Whitney is not hard, and he is not moody. He states what has to be done @ the begin'n of the semester and follows his guidelines very well. Uses WEBCT, meetings are no longer in Lufkin. Good teacher, great class....made a B!
