I took ECE 2010 with Makarov and TA for the class now and will probably have him for my MQP. If I were to describe WPI at its best, I would use Makarov as my example. If I were to select one professor to take in underground, Makarov would be my choice.

Comment:

Best professor at WPI that I've had so far. He knew my name in a large class, and was very encouraging. Lectures involved him sprinting between boards and putting knitting needles in wall plugs. He would come to lab sections and jump right in with the students, showing us cool tricks that went beyond the lab. Gives great hints during tests too.

The first time you will understand anything truly in your life. He has 7 exams, one every week on material he's taught for 3 days and plus an additional lab every week, so lots of work. He's available at 9pm on a Sunday and loves answering questions and helping students out, highly recommend taking his class.

Comment:

This is the only ECE course I need to take, and I'm happy it was with him. This class made me like ECE, at least for this one class. Super engaging lectures (even at 4pm). Do the homework and understand the concepts, and you will get an A. Matlab assignments are also due weekly, but are only 9% of your grade, so don't fret other that.

I've made it my mission to go back and rate every professor I've had at WP. I'm a pretty average student that knows how to work hard. Sergey Makarov goes above and beyond the call of duty for a professor. He brings the most genuine interest and passion to every lecture and is a joy to have. Not the easiest classes, but you will learn so much.

Makarov is extremely passionate about ECE and really tries to teach you the material. I would recommend reading because the book usually gives easier ways to do things than he does in lecture. The labs are a pain but an easy A if you can get through them. Overall he is great, and there are 6 tests so if you bomb one its no big deal.

Very likeable, enthusiastic guy. I found, however, that he assumes you know many of the fundamentals of EE when in fact you don't, as the class is supposed to teach them. I felt that he was way too fixated on building a "practical" circuit, rather than teaching the full scope of EE fundamentals needed to actually do so; & no CE material is covered.

He's an excellent teacher. You'll learn a lot. His lectures are enthusiastic, vivid, clear, and fast-paced. Lots of material, and there's a test EVERY FRIDAY. Tests are based on the homework, which is never collected. The essentials are worth 20pts, the details worth 5 pts. Labs are equal to tests, and they can be confusing, but graded generously.

One of my favorite professors so far. If you are lost in class then you can come to him and he'll be so happy to help. He is so excited about the material! Most likely he will highlight formulas you need, but he derives everything. If the deriving confuses you, wait until he boxes the formula you need. If you are struggling on the test, he;ll help.

Deserves the reputation he has. Tests/HW are easy. Do the reading and HW, they help. Labs are fun. MATLAB assignments can be a little difficult if you've never used it before. Definitely not a light class at 7 hours of class a week + MATLAB/HW/reading on the side. ECE 2010 with Makarov is one of the best classes you can take at WPI.

This was the first real big lecture class I had and it was a big wake up call as far as difficulty, but it was also my favorite class from the semester. Makarov is hilarious. don't miss lectures because they are pertinent to you passing and they are probably going to be the highlight of your day. Go to the lab help session or you will mess it up.

I loved the class and definitly convinced me to be an ECE major. The lectures went in to depth on the topics but Makarov was so enthusiastic it was never boring. If your having trouble go for help. The tests were difficult but there are 6 of them so you can do badly on a few but still do well. Also do book problems!

He really cares about the students and loves what he does. The class really boosted by interest in ECE. Labs are really helpful and fun if your interested. Not much work at all but theres a test every week. He's the only professor I'd take for intro to ECE

Prof. Makarov is what every professor should try to be. He knows his material inside and out and gives phenomenal lectures. He is helpful and a genuinely nice person. Exams are difficult but doable. To top it all off he has a GREAT Russian accent which makes it easy to listen to his lectures!
