Took Applied Linear Algebra: Lecture not very helpful on exams/quizzes. Book homework isn't mandatory but should do it to understand the material. I find the professor not good at transferring his knowledge on the subject to you. I always felt like I understood the material but always did terrible on the tests. Only grades are exams/quizzes.

Not a good professor. Nice enough guy but seemed disinterested in the subject he was teaching and was very poor at explaining. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.

You could't read his note, because his handwriting is really bad, he is drawing picture on the board, and his accent is wired, even you trying to learn from the book, it is hard to understand as well, because the Modern Algebra class is hard already, so when he teaches, he should explain everything really well, otherwise no one will understand it.

Lopez was alright. He goes too fast, and his "comprehensive" exams aren't really comprehensive and only cover content from the past few weeks, so if you don't know the most recent content in depth, you won't do well. He's not very good at teaching proofs either. If you have the option to take applied linear algebra, go with that instead.

Comment:
Dr. Lopez really cares about calculus and you can tell by the way he teaches. He sometimes he skips steps while going through examples. Tests are easy if you go to class and copy down examples, usually two or three of them are on his exam. Final was horrible. Study the practice exams and get free tutoring at AAC and you'll pass.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It's my second course with Lopez, and I'm taking another next quarter. It's a difficult course though: the class average on the first exam was close to a failing grade. If you don't feel comfortable writing proofs and taking the time to understand the material in depth, do not take this course.

He was extremely passionate and excited about calculus of all things. He does his very best to explain all cconcepts as clearly as possible, and if you just come to every class and pay attention you can get an A. Fantastic prof.

One of the best math teachers I've ever had. His lectures are never boring. It's clear he understands what he's teaching and knows how to connect with students. His tests are difficult, but only because the material is difficult, and he grades very fairly.

He is a nice guy but.... he throws curve balls on the tests, covers hard material in class that is on his tests but not the final. Not to mention he simplifies trig in his head so the notes are hard to follow. Good luck if you have him and the SI sessions wont necessarily help.

Nightmare of a teacher, a really nice guy though. Didn't know what group works or matlabs were at beginning but forced to do them by department. Doesn't use blackboard, got my final grade wrong on the grade report. Pretty uninterested in the class altogether. Doesn't even grade his own tests, which were difficult.

Sergio, where to start? well he drops your lowest test grade...sounds nice..right? Well not when the final is cumilative and is worth half your grade. I got an A in every math class in high school, and got a C in this class. Even if you do your homework, attend SI sessions, and go to the math tutoring lab, you're screwed.

Sergio was hard. Don't get discouraged early. He was very helpful and always encouraging. He ended up curving the class very nicely. If you try really hard, I mean do the homework and study for test likes you are supposed to, you should be alright. Just don't get discouraged early!

A very easy-to-understand professor. And even if you can't, he very eagerly answers questions. Very cheerful demeanor, never makes a fool of anyone. I recommend him to anyone who is actually willing to STUDY and EARN AN A IN MATHEMATICS (*gasp!*).
