Comment:

Really enjoyed this class, good mix of straight history and the zeitgeist that makes history come alive. He is a happy and relaxed person and fun to be around. Tests were surprisingly challenging in detail recollection so make sure to take good notes and review in detail. Autobiography of a Russian Socialist was a great choice of reading.

Very extensive knowledge on every subject you could bring up. Seminars are easy to get a good participation mark in as long as you are willing to speak up and have done your reading. Tests are straightforward and marked fairly. Will be taking a class with him again next term because of the great experience.

Serhy is a great prof. His lectures are funny and interesting, and while he is a bit of a tough marker, he is also a fair marker. His classes about Russian history feel very authentic thanks to his accent :)

Dr. Yekelchyk has good lectures, although his powerpoints are sparse, so you must take good notes. A portion of the grade was participation, and he takes attendance, so you can't skip very often. My main complete was that he took truly staggering amounts of time to mark tests - like a literal month after the final exam was written.

Serhy is an awesome professor (and funny guy all around), especially if you like Cold War movies. The quizzes are tough though, as he tests on small details from the readings, but the course was still enjoyable regardless.

Serhy is so great. I took his class in my last year, and he was extremely helpful. I did poorly on the first midterm, but I went to talk to him and he was prepared to change the weighting of that test if I did better on everything else. Super approachable, and will have you laughing the entire class while still learning loads. Definitely recommend.

Funny, entertaining guy. Serhy is a wealth of knowledge+loves to teach. He has a lot of passion+energy. Every lecture is jam packed with info but slides hardly have any words. GO TO CLASS! He marks fairly hard, he wants you to show everything you have. Serhy is a teacher that pushes you. Not a lot of reading, but remember to do them. Love him.

Amazing! He is both intelligent and funny. The best part about his courses is that he can always relate anything he is teaching to something that is relevant to today. Attendance is key though. Exams are easy if you come to class and do the VERY small amount of reading. Don't miss out on the chance at a chance to boost that GPA!

Super nice, funny, and a great guy. Can make even the most dull topic at least hilarious. He really knows his stuff, and even wrote his own book - for those of you taking his Ukrainian history class - it isn't a completely mandatory read, but helps with the lectures. As a marker, he grades extremely fairly, and wants you to do well.

Great prof. Had some issues this semester so took until the last day for some people to get midterms back, but the evaluation was fair if you studied. Final was a bit more evil, but still not that bad. Very funny, I'd definitely take another class with him.

AWESOME. He teaches such interesting classes. I'm an econ major and I took his stalinism class and his stalinist cinema class as electives and they were the best choice ever! With these types of classes he is soo easy, but they are soo awesome and interesting. He is so funny and has an awesome, actually understandable accent! Love him! Recommended!

Could anyone else had taught this course better than Serhey? A little tough on the midterm but I think he purposely does that to inspire students. While he had favorites in class (including some people of questionable intellect) he still gives A and B to those who deserve them. I definitely recommend History of Modern Ukraine.

Amazing prof! I have taken every class he has offered in the past 4 years. He knows his stuff, and makes it fun to learn. He is very fair, and always available for any help. He also is very very funny, good and dry sense of humour. I would highly recommend him to any history or russian major, or anyone who wants to get to know a top prof!
