Comment:
Professor Maddock gives the most boring lectures I have ever been unfortunate enough to attend. He drones on and on and doesn't give opportunities for participation even though he grades you on it. He also assigns a ton of reading every night, and there are reading quizzes. However, if you do the reading, you should do well on the papers.

Here is class: Read a bunch of a books, take a quiz on it, listen to him talk about something that has nothing to do with the class for an hour and 15 min. Two weeks after you start the book you will need to write a 1600 word essay and he doesn't give A's. I have never gotten a B- on a paper and i got 3 of them. Weird guy overall.

You have to buy many books for this class and the readings kill you. theres no test, but there are weekly quizes that are 1 question about the readings. you get 3 papers, but they are kind of hard because he grades like an english professor. He doesnt give anyone higher than a B. I got an A in it, but that was b/c of the quizzes and the post onelin

He was a fine professor. He loves to hear himself talk, every class is spent with him at the front lecturing about pointless facts not useful for our papers or life in general. We did a lot of reading and wrote three papers, he was a fine grader. Overall it was fine for a basic history class that I just needed to pass.

Professor Maddock is very smart and passionate about history. He was great about the amount of work he graded including three essays. He really tried to get participation going in class either during or after his lectures. He did give reading quizzes which was helpful to know a takeaway. He gave a lot of reading for homework.

Maddock is a very knowledgable guy, especially in his field, but his class will make you fall asleep. Lectures drag and it is the same thing every class. No noted need to be taken you literally sit there while he talks as he sits in a desk for a hour and leaves little room for participation (but thats a main component of your grade).

I took him for Chuck Berry's America and loved the class. I wanted a history of music class and this was the best I could find. While he goes off on tangents fairly often, it's a fun class and if you do the work and participate you'll do fine.

I took his Chuck Berry American History class. He tends to lecture about off topic stories about random history and give out 5 essays that are graded more like an english teacher than a history teacher. I encourage you to NOT take his class

This class was awful. He lectured every class and left hardly any room for participation. The only homework he gives is the reading. Gives you 3 papers and a final 10 page research paper. He will never give you an A or B because he never thinks anything is good enough. Also don't ask him for help, its a curse that you will get a worse grade.

Took Cont. America with him, great class. He will give you an F in participation if you do not interrupt him and speak! Written reflections are optional for participation. Edit your papers like your life depends on it! He likes to nitpick at "flow", grammar, and organization. Overall and amazingly intelligent guy, I learned A LOT.

This guy knows everything about every president and nuclear bombs. He lectures for most of class, and you can get him going on tangents about sports and other things. Assigns a ton of reading but if you skim it and know the main ideas you will be fine. No tests, 3 papers and a research paper pretty tough grader

don't do it. he doesn't look you in the eye, allows room for no class participation. not the best grader, and expects you to do all the reading even though there is no chance to discuss it. no tests just papers. class is boring and he is full of himself

hes a good teacher if your one of those kids that sit in the front and ask frequent questions. Its alot of reading, alot of papers, and if you a little off on your reserch...then he will give you a horrible grade. I would try someone else for history at deadhill

If you dont like him your nuts. You learn so much in his classes. He knows everything about politics & pop culture and has a great sense of humor when it comes to republican politicians and pop culture figures. He has great taste in film as well and knows everything about all types of music. The work is heavy and challenging but he grades fairly.

The classes are boring. He won't keep your attention, but that's ok as long as you do the reading. Participate in class when possible. 4 short papers, one 8 page research paper and a group project. The class focussed mostly on Vietnam from different view points which was intereseting. He's a nice guy, and credits effort. A fair grader IMO.

Very difficult class. He uses books that don't have sparknotes and assigns an essay every two weeks and a midterm and final essay. (He'll have them graded before you get back to your dorm). B's and C's are barely managable for the typical-not-do-everything student, but A's are nuts. Nonetheless, the guy is an effin genius that knows everything.
