There are some articles and books to read, but mostly they are comic books. I wouldn't say the prof is a great speaker. She goes through the material quite quickly, and doesn't explain that well, but overall the subject is interesting if you are into anime/manga. 3 short essays and 4 quizzes plus participation marks. BTW it counts as lit req

The course this year is ridiculous. The TA's are inconsistent with the marking, expecting scholarly essays written by students. Course objectives are not clearly defined and very subjective depending on who marks your paper. Do not take this course.

Awesome prof. I knew nothing about Japan before this class, she made me want to take more courses in the department. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and is super clear on her expectations for essays/assignments. TAKE THIS CLASS! Rated easy but it's not a bird course, it's just so interesting you can't help but get a good grade!

She doesn't really know what she's doing and admits that she's not completely knowledgeable about some aspects of the curriculum (poli sci) but she puts in effort tries to help. The marking was hard and the class had to be scaled up.

Doesn't really know what she's doing and often unorganized. Assignments don't give leeway and there are WAY too many readings. Marking is critical and prof is always short on time and rushed. Notes provided are unhelpful. Textbooks need not be bought as the readings are posted. Is nice, but not in her comfort zone with women's studies. Last resort.

Picky prof that tends to go over time. Expect to read 40+ articles and chapters as her lectures are ALL based off the readings. Nice prof but when it comes down to teaching WMST, she tries to be knowledgeable in something I feel she isn't. The TA seemed to know more than she did. Expects you to write volumes in 250 words for assignments.

She doesn't usually teach women's studies, so that explains part of her poor teaching abilities, but she could've taken the time to learn about the material. She frequently shoots down ideas, then later realizes the speaker was correct, and she is generally unorganized.

She was very unorganized and wasnt clear on instructions. we had 5 essays to write i think, but because she was soo behind she skipped the last essay assignment. she is flexible which is good. but be warned about the TA, ( esp NICK) he grades unreasonably and takes marks off for example if you have too many spaces between your paragraphs, silly.

Sharalyn is great - I learned a lot about J literature (and much, much more) from her. To do well, do the readings, think about them and participate in class. She was available for discussions and showed interest in my work. Overall, I would highly recommend her and this class - she was my favourite prof this year.

Sharalyn's great-she teaches way more than J literature. She was available for consultation and the course itself was not particularly difficult. I learned a lot. Highly recommended!! Get to know her and do participate in class - give your opinions cause they matter. Overall, my fave prof this term.

OMG..this course was hard. She was a very nice teacher but she seemed disorganized and frantic at times. For me, she was a very tough marker and was not very clear on guidelines for paper. For the final, you could choose to pick the exam or paper, and i recommend the exam, which i believed bumped up my mark.

She's a really great prof. Leads discussion really well, encourages participation, open to new ideas, and very free with project outlines ie lets you do what you want. She really gets you to think, but to get the most out of class you really should participate. Overall a very fun and interesting class.
