She can be very blunt and the workout load can be burdensome at times but Dr. Chen is one of my favorite professors. She promotes discussion in her classes and answers any question you have. Incredibly accommodating to good students also, but it must be earned. Attendance is a must, over a quarter of your grade, but it is certainly worth it!

Tried to reach out for help. Instead of helping, she only commented on how little I knew about the subject. No help at all. Too much information thrown at once.

I can't speak for her other classes but her "China and the Modern Era" class was perhaps the best class I have ever taken. You'll have to read a lot and in order to do well, you'll really need to get engrossed in the material. This being said, if you come to class prepared and eager to learn, you'll have your mind blown. Highly recommended.

I struggled so much in this class for about 3/4 of the semester. The homework took about 4-6 hours weekly. Use class notes and go through the book a bit, focus on the things she didn't cover because sometimes it's on the test. Homework helps a lot on tests/quizzes. if you try you'll get through it. Got an A in the end so it wasn't that bad

Professor Chen is very enthusiastic about the subject. I took her class a few years ago when I actually had time to read through texts, reading certainly made it a breeze, but I suspect that you could still do well without it. Her lectures were thorough and covered most of what was discussed in the reading. Very nice woman overall.

Super nice lady. Her lectures can be tedious, since most history is, and there is LOADS of reading. Take good notes on lectures & readings because tests are on both equally. Tests aren't too difficult if you study.

Chen is a difficult teacher, but if you are able to keep an open ind you are able to learn a lot from her. She has a very different (Native Chinese) view of many historical issues. Some of these are contradictory to the standard American interpretation, so an issue does arise for gen. ed. students that are just looking to full fill requirements.

Will come across as very strict and harsh during first class, but I think she is just trying to weed out students(it worked!). Otherwise great teacher and very knowledgeable about the subject. Also receptive to class input, when it was clear everyone in the class felt a 2 week period on the syllabus was too much, she worked with us to ease theload

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! she is extremely unfair in grading, and it does not matter if you go to her office hours. If you do not know anything about history she will know right away. If your opinion does not match hers she will fail you. Unless you're a history major I suggest you do not take this course.

I got an A in this class because I studied and read from the textbook, but her lectures helped a lot with her quizzes. I enjoy history so this class did not bother me at all. This class was a great refresher from high school, and I was glad I took it.

She is really nice and is very knowledgeable, but the class is a lot of work for a gen. ed, which is the reason why I took it. It was challenging even though I read all the chapters and went to every class, which is mandatory. If you're a history major then I recommend this class, but if you need a gen. ed I would stay away.

She is very nice. I thought her grading was a little unfair. The midterm was not hard if you studied. Her quizzes are not on her lectures at all, pretty much everything in the book not in her lectures is on the quiz. I like history, so this class wasn't too bad, but her grading made it harder. For a gen ed, its a bit much.

She's very clear, and teaches you exactly what you need to know for quizzes and tests. You don't really need to read the book, just skim the review questions and then write down the answers when she goes over them in class. The papers are really easy, just summarize a packet she hands out. She knows a ton about history.

Do not take her if you are not interested in history!! I was put in the class my first semester there. I withdrew from the class because my average was a D-. She seems like a great history teacher but if you are not interested in history don't take her class. Theres a lot of material to remember.

Prof. Chen is pretty awesome. First day of class she tells everyone that attendance is mandatory and that if you skip class or dont take notes, to drop her class. Simple as that. If you do her two papers and study a little for the weekly quiz you'll get at LOWEST a B. If you study hard for the mid term and final exams you'll pretty much get an A.
