Sometimes seems intimidating, but really nice. Knows her stuff. Daily readings, usually not too long. Tends to focus more on abstract concepts than real-world/modern examples - can get confusing. Biweekly forum questions. MINI ESSAYS: 5 essays you have 30 min to write. Gives comprehensive feedback. Chance to revise 2 essays for final. Great fashion

Sonita was my advisor throughout college and for my honors, so I may be a bit biased. But she's an amazing professor--definitely the smartest and one of the hardest professors I encountered at Macalester. The format of her classes is challenging, but it's with her that I've learned the tenets of WGSS that I still reference daily.

Sonita can boil down a huge concept into a clearly understandable definition, enabling her students to speak about hegemony, imperialism, etc and actually know what they're talking about. Her wit and speed can be intimidating. But who doesn't want a brilliant professor? Manageable amount of reading. Timed essays can be frustrating, but valuable.

If you find writing with a time limit stressful do not take this class. Instead of essays you have "mini essays" that are difficult AF because you have to summarize these complex theories and critique or expand upon them in... 30 MINUTES.

Sonita is an amazing professor!! The discussions are stimulating, the ideas are new, and I feel like I have learned so much since the beginning of the class. It's hard but worth it. And the readings really great, very interesting.

Sonita=intense. I'm scared of this lady, but she seems to have more respect for you if you don't show her your fear. She is brilliant and doesn't understand that everybody else is not, except when she does and thinks everybody else is dumb. Her class pushed me and made me work in a way that was torture, but the kind of torture that makes you grow.

I can't say enough about Sonita. She is both brilliant and fabulous. Take her class, and don't be intimidated...she's there to help, but unlike a lot of profs. you need to take the initiative and take responsibility for your own academics.
