Mixed feelings about him. Not an easy class at all. Make sure you read the material or else you'll be lost. It's a LOT of reading, but do your best to keep up with the reading. In classroom discussion, he questions just about every comment you say. But he's more than willing to help out, and he will challenge you and make you think outside the box

Awesome professor. Probably the only worthwhile course I took in the college of education. He makes you think - actually think and expects you to defend your reasoning. He will not spoon-feed you and he expects you to be able to do the reading and think/reason logically. This helped me figure out my educational rational. Loved it!

Best course in School of Education and best instructor. I graduated in 1981. Loved his course, loved his Socratic style, and loved that he made us all think for ourselves. Superb instructor. Not for wimps who expect to be spoon fed. Learn something! Take his classes!

AWESOME TEACHER! finally a prof at UNI who lets you THINK FOR YOURSELF. there is a bit of reading, but it is worth it in order to help you find your own way of teaching. He is extra helpful, you just have to ask and care about your teaching profession. TAKE HIM. and START THINKING!!

Fortgang gives you what you need. It's that simple. Future teachers - if you want to know what you need to know for your future jobs. Take him. He will challenge you in the way you need and teach you what you need. Not only that, he makes sense. Especially if you are patient enough to get through the first year. Take Fortgang!

He's the most intelligent ed faculty here - other people don't like him because he's intelligent and he knows he is. I think he's brilliant and realistic - he doesn't believe in blowing sunshin up the kids butt or child-centered learning which is great he's a traditionalist and a great one at that.

Dr. Fortgang is the greatest teacher. I have learned the most in his class out of any of my classes here. If you read and participate you WILL learn. You get a great new perspective from the typical one we get from our ed. faculty. He really makes you think and philosophize. He is kind of a jerk but he is very kind and very intelligent! take him.

Mixed feelings about his teaching style. He does not sugar coat and goes against what we are taught in most other edu classes but it gives you another point of view in edu (dont nec. run w/ it tho).take him if you are willing to quit whining about the work. Keep a positive attitude&it will be much less painful, keep an open mind & u might learn!

He is really not a bad guy. He definitely cares about his students. Dont get me wrong, this class is hard & it was boring for me, but he is more than willing to help u. U have 2 read the books or u will do bad & the books are repetitive and uninteresting. He will hand out a study guide and spend 1 class period talking abt 1 question! Nice man tho.

This class is interesting. It really makes you think about what kind of teacher you want to be. At first it seems really boring and hard, but as the semester goes on it gets kind of interesting. There are three tests all over the readings, a paper that has to be 5-7 pages, and a final. The readings are alot but try and keep up with them.

An amazing teacher. Please take all of his classes that you can. Encourages students to actually think. Most students come to college seeking grades and not knoledge if this is you, take someone else because this class is not for the lazy and/or stupid. p.s Bob Dylan rules

Not gonna lie--it's a tough class, and Fortgang is a tough prof. But, unlike a lot of the ed classes, he actually pushes you to think for yourself instead of just telling you what you should think. There is a lot of reading, but it's very interesting. It really makes you think twice about what kind of teacher you want to be. Recommended!
