Honestly one of the worst classes I have ever taken. If you write something against his opinion he docs your grade. He sits and talks the entire class no notes or anything. I rewrote two papers and got the same grade. Do not recommend

As an english major this class was a challenge. 3 papers,(allows rewrites) a midterm, and a final. hard grader. Both exams contain passage idThe midterm had a middle english vocab section and the final a cumulative essay. Midterm was fair, the final was brutal. Do the work to get the best possible grade but I put so much work into getting a B.

I took prof russell 3x, great professor! i would've enjoyed the canterbury tales more if it wasn't a 9am class, but other than that he did his usual great job at teaching it, and it's nice to see a professor who really loves the subject. The ID questions on the final were a bit difficult but other than that the papers and midterm were easy.

He's a really nice guy, and is willing to work with you. He is a fair grader, and will mark you as absent if you have your phone out during class, which is reasonable. Don't be a jerk to him, participate in class, and make sure he knows who you are. If you do this, you are guaranteed to not only get a good grade but you will learn a lot.

Material chosen are obscure and extremely dull. This class will definitely test your sanity. If you are opinionated, intelligent or think for yourself, don't take his class. In class he entertains opinions on the interpretation of texts but you will be penalized on assignments if any of your opinions differ from his.

I guess the one downfall is all of the reading you have to do. Because if you don't read well enough you might end up doing bad on the final and midterm because he gives you passages to books you have read and you have to identify them and what's happening, etc. Even though I read everything it was kind of hard. But he's a really nice professor!

Canterbury Tales with Russell is pretty hard (especially as a non English major), but he tries his best to make it relevant and interesting. The class was pretty boring, but I learned a lot. There is a midterm and a final which are doable and three papers. If he sees you trying and improving throughout the semester, he'll give you a good grade.

Boring class and very hard work, but Prof Russell is definitely a great professor considering. He jokes around during class and really got to know our names quickly. Also extremely helpful; I was totally confused about what to do for the first essay and he sat with me and helped me outline exactly what I was gonna say. definitely take him

Just took him over the summer I session and found him to be a very nice guy. He really appreciates you coming to class and doing the work. If you work he will do his best to help you get the best grade possible. I hate english classes, but out of all the english professors I think he is the best. Do the work and you will be fine.

He's tough if you don't do the work, but if you pay attention and do the work it's incredibly enjoyable and doable work. He's fun when he's lecturing, and most classes are broken up into three times a week, so it's not ever an overload. I suggest taking him any chance possible, he's great. (:

His lectures are utterly dull and confusing. By the time he tries to include everyone in class discussion, we are either asleep or more uninterested. His desperate attempts at being funny do the opposite for him. Three papers 3-4 pgs. (ones longer) and difficult midterm and final. You study a million quotes only to have about 14 on the actual test.

One of the best professors at Hofstra. He is very intelligent and knows what he is teaching (unlike some professors that bring thousands of notes to class to read from that aren't on the exams- Burke eng 42). You learn alot and he does not make the class impossible to pass, with hard work. Would definitely recommend

MIDTERM HARD, FINAL BETTER. YOU MUST WORK REALLY HARD FOR YOUR GRADE. HE'S A FAIR TEACHER WHO KNOWS HIS LITERATURE. DONT HALF-ASS THIS CLASS, WORK HARD AND YOU'LL DO GOOD

He is a nice guy and truly cares about the student. He is very smart in his area and many times he made it seem like you were supposed to know the stuff prior to attending the class, which might make someone who did not have much experience a little uncomfortable. His papers and tests were not impossible, as long as you took careful notes.

Dr. Russell is not easy, but he's not impossible. His papers are challenging, but if you put in the effort you will find that he's a pretty fair grader. His midterms/finals can be difficult, but if you pay attention to the quotations he singles out in the readings, you'll do just fine. He's a nice guy, but he'll make you work for your grade.
