Didn't completely get it DURING Dr. Adkison's seminar, though I thought it was very challenging. Well, I'm getting it now that I'm coming to the end of my first semester teaching my own class. I keep coming back to the concepts we discussed and am really starting to understand the "big picture" he insisted on us developing. Thanks!

Comment:

Tons of reading and lots of writing and discussion, but this is one focused class. Though I wasn't sure at first, I've come to appreciate Dr. Adkison's insistence on understanding WHY we want to teach something in the classroom before we try to decide HOW we should do it. I hope all of my graduate seminars are as good as this one.

Hard at first 'cause I don't like talking in class but he makes EVERYBODY talk. Different than a lot of other classes, not too much work but high expectations for what we do in class and in writing stuff. Actually kind of made me like English, sort of, and definitely learned useful skills for my second semester.

A really productive seminar--it was brief but really interesting. I really enjoyed the range of other students and thought Steve did a great job of using our differences as a strength for our discussions. I wish I had gotten this understanding of what it means to learn in my major much, much sooner than my senior year. Take this course if you can!

Comment:

Since this was an Honors course, I expected it to be a high quality class, but my expectations were far exceeded. Wow. I'll never think about my thinking and my learning in the same way again. Steve is one of the most discriminating teachers I've ever had and has certainly pushed me farther than I've ever been pushed in terms of critical thinking.

Great course--not at all what I expected from freshman English. Steve constantly challenged me to think for myself and not depend on what I assumed I knew. The only problem is that I have gotten into the habit of questioning everything in all of my classes and that's not always welcomed by some instructors. Highly recommend any class he teaches.
