P. Carr is the BEST. Get on his good side (he's nice to everyone) by participating and he'll root for you for the rest of your college career. He understands that everyone has busy lives and doesn't assign a ridiculous amount of reading. Skimming to the best of your ability is enough for him. He's like a proud, goofy & caring dad. Highly recommend.

Professor Carr is a great professor, but he takes some getting used to. He will make fun of you and call you out in class, but not in a mean way. He wants you to participate, and he often tries to make jokes to help the lectures be more fun. He's a great professor if you're looking for a fun English class and a professor to look out for you.

Carr is a weird old man. He's nice and means well but isn't the best professor. The class was not difficult but he made it painful to sit through lecture.

P. Carr makes his agenda blatantly clear; read, raise your hand, give a thought or two, and out you go with an A. He understands the importance of simply trying and encourages every student to do so. He is relaxed, funny, goofy, and always able to help. He does not teach every semester so if he's free, Take his Class!

I love Professor Carr, he's out there sometimes, but is always willing to help if you're not understanding what he's saying, which happens a lot. He's hilarious. For sure recommend.

Comment:
Dr. Carr is very engaging and makes the discussion a comfortable environment. He has a crude and outlandish sense of humor but I find him funny. Cares deeply for the material but is very relaxed about assignments - just make sure you do them and put in some effort. No tests, just a couple papers and a group project. Would recommend! Easy to talk to

The Junior Seminar I had with him was pretty interesting. He made it thought provoking and was very relaxed and easy to talk to. At times he was a bit vague at what he was expecting from the class which made some parts of the class a little difficult just because it wasn't what everyone was used to.

Dr. Carr certainly tries to be a good instructor--he handles class well and express what appears to be a genuine interest in students' thoughts. I didn't particularly like his class, though, as I found his attitude off-putting and slightly condescending.

Best professor I've had at Pitt. Allows the class to focus on what they find interesting while elaborating on nuances of the subject to further the discussion. If you put the work in you'll get an A.

Hilarious. Doesn't take himself too seriously and is genuinely interested in his students' work. He wants you to write about what interests you and doesn't think that grades should be the main focus-- a true academic with the right values. An English Lit career at Pitt isn't completely without him.

Best professor I've had a Pitt. His class was difficult and a lot of reading yet I found myself very willing to complete the reading in order to engage with him in class. Prof. Carr is funny and brilliant and makes his class worth while.

Had Carr for an Enlightenment to Revolution aka restoration comedy is my bag class--it sucked just like Carr. He's useless, his class is useless; but then again isn't every class at Pitt? I didn't go to class, I didn't read the books and I got a B. I lament even purchasing books for classes like this.

I've had two classes with Prof. Carr and have never heard him talk over anyone. He'll kid around with everyone, so if you can't take a joke, maybe he's not for you. Such an intelligent and interesting guy, and his assignments let you experiment...without penalty if it doesn't always work...instead of just spewing out the standard essay.

Hands down the best professor I've ever had. Effected every other english course i've taken during and since. He is tough, brilliant, and full of wit. I mocked him all semester and he loved it and threw it all back at me. Lord Carr makes english fun, but he'll twist your thinking so you approach it all differently. Can't say enough about him!

Professor Carr is a tough but fair professor, and one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. Don't take classes with him if you're looking for an easy blowoff course. But if you're serious about literary criticism, he's one of the best in the English department. His manner is a bit gruff, though...

His class is tough. Not anything to be taken lightly. Extremely unorganized, never lets class out on time, and is always unclear on almost everything. He is fairly pretentious and allows students to get carried away often. Readings were somewhat intense also.

I agree with the person below. Prof. Carr is egotistical as hell and, I think, purposely talks above the students to show his "superiority". Obviously has favorites, and shoots down the comments of the non-favorites. I'm going to avoid him like the plague from now on.

Steven Carr is a great professor, one of the most intelligent (and sometimes intimidatingly so) men I've ever met... but I felt like the grading was really harsh and he had different scales of expectation for some students and not others. Take him... but be ready to work.

Prof. Carr is the most pretentious, egotistical man i have ever met. He is not helpful at all, he is not encouraging or understanding. I do not recommend this man, he has his favorite students and treats everyone else horribly.
