Honestly at first I was kinda scared of him, he's intense, but thats just his style. The more you get involved the more you'll get out of the class. Yeah he likes athletes but they were some of the people most willing to engage in my class. Show to him that you're making an effort and he'll like you, and ask for help if you need it. He really cares

To get an A in Etter's class, show up to class everyday, sit in the front, and engage in the conversation. Don't be intimidated by his pushback, ask questions, and find good partners to review and work on cases with. If you do all of the following and not concern yourself so much with your grade, you'll be pleased with your final grade.

I liked Etter. He connected his real world experience with the class material very well. Grading wasn't in a blackbox, we knew what we were getting. Does he like athletes? Yeah, but if you participate you get the credit you deserve. He's a tough and intense guy, but if you can't handle his personality, the finance path may not be for you.

Like one of the comments, he is a typical banker, so dont be too harsh on him. He brags about his company a lot (like I said, typical banker..), tho no one heard it before. lol I thought he said Greylock (that would be awesome!) Grading depends if he likes you, so key is to get close to him!

He enjoys talking to athletes and those kids with some level of PE/IB backgrounds, or those who are super passionate about PE. You will do perfectly fine if you are one of above, otherwise, take with caution.

Hardly does this Prof read homeworks or even finals you submit. Most of the grading is done in a blackbox where certain people will be happy if you are good friend with Etter, and other will not be so amazed at your grades if you do not speak very often in class or do not come to office hours.

I have no idea how this guy has a high clarity rating. His class is nothing but random rants from an arrogant banker. That being said I think he's a good human being who cares about the students he likes in his class. He will go to great lengths to help those who kiss his ass. The cases are time consuming but really interesting.

Best class to take at Haas. Talk to any alum in investment banking or finance, and they will tell you this is the best class they ever took at Berkeley. Teaching style is realistic to real world. Man up during 8AMs, participate, and you'll get an A. Welcome to the real world.

This class was useful for interviews, career advice, and networking. Everyone I met in the class was ambitious and smart. Etter doesn't return papers so you don't know how you're doing. But generally everyone who doesn't mess up badly gets an A.

Corporate Finance with Steve Etter is the best class at Haas. This is a must take, the most practically useful if you are at all interested in finance/banking/private equity/consulting/etc. Etter is also an amazing Cal alumi and mentor to all of his students. Don't miss out!

Best advice would be to go to every class. Since it's at 8am it's easy to miss class but you're really hurting yourself by doing that. A lot of people who missed classes found themselves lost early on. If you attend class and ask questions then it's pretty easy stuff. Don't be afraid of asking questions. Plus, Etter notices if you miss class.

Hard class because there is not much feedback on how you are doing. It would probably be a good idea to go to class 30 minutes early when something is due and go over it with Etter to make sure you're doing it right, especially early in the semester. He seems happy to do this. Assignments are not handed back so that's your opportunity for feedback.

Interesting class, but needs better grading system. Current system is too arbitrary and favors people who kiss up in class. Don't expect to get a good grade if you give an insightful comment every class and Etter doesn't remember you. If you want an A, sit in front, wear bright colors and a lot of ass.
