Comment:

Berk gives amazing lectures that keep you interested for the entire class, and can be quite humorous at times. Be alert, take notes in class, and you will do well and actually learn a lot. His classes are always a first choice when I'm looking to fill my schedule.

Comment:

Iconic, but overrated. No real direction on how much to read before each class and if you ask him to repeat something (even a word or two), he'll spend more time telling you he won't repeat it, condescendingly. No feedback on assignments/emails. Great lecturer with lots of wisdom and not too hard, but there are better choices/courses out there.

I sat in class with Professor Berk in 1978 for The Holocaust. It was one of the best classes I had taken. Now, 36 years later I have had the opportunity to revisit this class, thanks to Union College's new on-line lecture series. He is still as dynamic, engrossing and interesting as he ever was. Thank you Union and thank you Professor Berk!

Seriously overrated professor. While he is brilliant and entertaining in lectures, he is also demeaning and unwilling to explain areas of improvement or difficult concepts. Stay away unless you're taking the class pass/fail.

Prof Berk is an amazing and entertaining lecturer. I never once was bored in the three hour Holocaust class I took. Prepare for lots of (relevant) reading. He seems gruff at first, but by the end of the class I really wanted him as my advisor! Alas, he was only a visiting prof at Skidmore, but we're very lucky he came.

Prior to taking a class with Professor Berk I was skeptical of the notion that a professor could offer a student so much that his/her life could change. I no longer feel that way. Berk is a brilliant man but also a man who, if a serious student seeks it, will offer a tremendous amount of guidance on life. The lucidity of his lectures is spectacula

The man is simply amazing. Some find him intimidating, but anyone who takes the time to attend office hours can testify to his kind nature and genuine interest in each of his students. Anyone that graduates from Union without enrolling in at least one of Professor Berk's classes does himself a great disservice.
