Funny with his quiet subtle humor. His grading system for homework seemed a bit random but overall fair. The class itself was pretty boring and repetitive, but his homework writing prompts were provoking and interesting.

I took Intro to Poety as my first english course at Bates and I adored Prof. Dillon. Hes dry and hilarious and Ive never heard him say a students comment was wrong, even though he definitely makes you work really hard on those papers. Id recommend him more to people who already love English because he gives back what you put in to the course.

He only assigns a few papers which no matter what youre going to get a B (+/-) on, unless youre a favorite of his or an english major. Super boring class but you just have to sit there. If youre looking for an A, dont take, looking for a reallllyyyy easy B, go for it

Wonderful professor. Really creative essay prompts for American Writers Since 1900. The class even gets to do 'Visual Pages', which are basically drawings about the readings. Always excited to go to his class. Would highly recommend.

I took American Writers Since 1900 with Professor Dillon. For each class there was assigned reading and a one-page paper on said reading due. Dillon is funny, kind, and his comments on papers are generally helpful and easy to understand. However, he wasn't great at engaging the class and creating a lively discussion. I'd recommend him overall.

I was a little bit scared by Dillon on the first day. He has an odd sense of humor, and talks really quietly in the beginning of class. However, I came to love Dillon's class. He is not a terribly tough grader, he's nice and he is incredibly brilliant. He manages to turn anything you want to say into something insightful. I learned a lot with him

Steve Dillon is amazing. He's brilliant, and loves to make (unintentionally) hilarious comments that either don't make sense or make you laugh. He's a great professor and although he's kind of awkward, he's very helpful and wants you to work to your best potential.

I took FYS Film Art with Steve Dillon and he is the man. From detailed insight into films to hysterical comments made under his breath, he is a captivating guy. If you don't like him you don't have a sense of humor. He was also my adviser and made himself very available, while still stressing independence.

Amazing teacher. Have had him for FYS and English now--the English persuaded me to be a major. Brilliant man who cares about his students, regardless of what some may think due to his his passive style. Witty and quick. Must take a class with him for the experience!

Took his Writers since 1900 course. Very interesting and well selected survey of modern and postmodern literature. Recommend it to english majors and non-majors alike. Very simple assignments but they make you think about the reading. Great experience overall!

If he mocked your poem, it was probably bad, and you needed that brought to your attention. My apologies, but Steve Dillon is one of the most insightful, witty, intelligent professors on this campus, and his well of knowledge is much, much deeper than he lets on. Don't be turned off by his demeanor, embrace it.

Hated him. One of my worst college experiences. I did really well in college, but hated his class and my grade reflected that. Avoid at all costs.

Absolutely one of the best profs at Bates. Dillon is as good in film theory courses as he is in literary theory. Brilliant. He is the antithesis of superficiality. Those who do not like him or his courses tend to be highly superficial. And stupid.

He literally mocked me in class for writing a poem in a style he didn't like!I welcome criticism, but what good is a professor who judges work by his personal preference? The only thing I learned from his smug, condescending style was that sometimes people won't like my writing but I'll write anyway!

He is why I became a history major instead of an English major. I am now a professor at a major university, well-published, very successful. I got a D in his class -- my only thing below an A-minus at Bates. I hated the class, and did really poorly. I still think about hating that class.

One of the BEST professors I have ever had. Very dry, quick witted sense of humor, and very cute in a jaded, sardonic Michael J. Fox kinda way. He's not hard, or difficult, or unreasonable: he's GOOD.

Great course in Poetry.. very witty you have to like the dry sense of quirky humor. The man looks like he got trapped in 1970... be amused.
