Comment:
Chinese is a challenging course, for sure, but Shi Laoshi (Prof Knicely) explains the concepts well. Hes somewhat intimidating but personable when theres confusion or need for clarification. TAs, who teach the class 4 out of the 5 days each week, are hit or miss (I had two great TAs and one less-than-great one).

There are only two things you need to get an A in Knicely's class: show up to class, and take the time to prepare the material. You will notice your Chinese ability greatly improve if you do so. Contrary to his stony countenance, he is amusing (only if you take the time to learn Chinese) and a good person to know for the future.

I thought he was intimidating at first, but over time I started to really like him. He can be funny sometimes. You are pretty much guaranteed an A if you show up with a good attitude and put forth your best effort. He doesn't expect your Chinese to be perfect since he knows everybody is still learning.

Despite a stony expression he's actually very funny, although I think most students didn't pick up on his jokes (I often found myself to be the only person in the class laughing when he made a joke) which is why they may think he's rude. He's blunt. Don't be over sensitive. Ask for help if you need it and you'll find he's an excellent professor.

Decent professor. Really rude person in general. He is definitely my least favorite professor at OSU. Not very helpful but it's okay because his class was fairly easy. His Chinese teaching is exceptional. Hopefully he'll start working on his own personal attitude. Easy A.

Classes do not have easy material, but everything is explained well and if you pay attention and put in good effort, you will get an A. I have had him for three classes and he is one of my favorite teachers at OSU.

Shi Laoshi is fantastic. He will let you know what you're doing wrong, he is always willing to help and a is very flexible with meeting times. If you're in need of help, he will arrange other times to meet with you if you can't make it. He wants his students to succeed. He is quite funny, and very entertaining to have teaching you.

I had the opportunity to spend the summer in Qingdao when Dr. Knicely was the resident for the program. His quietness and stony appearance tends to intimidate people ( it scared the hell out of me at first) but he really wants his students to succeed. He will go FAR out of his way to help students if they are willing to put the work in.

I hated this guy. so old-fashioned. learning a new language should be fun, right? well, forget it with this guy. plus, don't expect any regard from him. he'll just stare at you. so rude. doesn't treat his students so "knicely".

Classes were very involved. You had to know what you were doing everyday when you came to class, though the material for each day was relatively little compared to other classes. Read, practice, and succeed. Knicely was interesting, helpful, funny, and sometimes rather strange. An overall good professor.

I think he is a excellent teacher. He likes people who ask questions when you dont understand something and also he likes people who know alot of differet facts about the culture and language. People say that he is intimidating but I think for the most part he is fair.

He can come across as intimidating but he means well and knows what he's talking about. Do not take this class if you don't plan to work hard. He also grades very difficultly at the beginning like others in this department but don't get discouraged because the grading gets easier if you study and show you care!
