Dr. Courtney really cares and just wants you to be excited about the material. She doesn't grade for participation but she definitely will respect you more if you do. Have fun with the essays because its pretty cool stuff. The hardest part about this class is you can only miss 3 classes before you drop a letter grade.

Dr. Courtney cares about her students and gives great feedback on writing assignments. Her expectations are high and specific, so I would recommend going to her office hours and having her read your drafts so she can provide feedback before you turn it in. The essays are long, but interesting, and although she makes you work for it, she is fair.

Dr. Courtney's class is very interesting and engaging. I learned more about film than I ever expected to in one semester. Participation is key in this class, as is working hard to improve your essays before turning them in. She has mandatory editing sessions in class and is always available and happy to give feedback on papers.

This was a great class! Dr. Courtney really values student input and structures class mostly around class analysis and discussion. She doesn't lecture so much as guide discussions. She encourages (via the syllabus) that you start papers early, and believe me, it helps SO MUCH. I brought my papers to her, and she gave me solid help. SHE IS GREAT.

She's overall a great professor, really passionate about the subject and will go out of her way to make herself available to anyone who needs help. There are some lengthy readings at times and you will have a few big papers but she gives plenty of time for them. Requires participation!

This class is very hard. If you think this is a blow off class because it's film like I did, then don't take this class. Unless you are passionate, you will have to drop the class with a W like I did, because I was going to fail. She is passionate, but you have to be passionate to do remotely well.

Prof. Courtney can be a harsh grader. VERY detail oriented. I actually made A's on papers, but the amount of red ink on the pages was astonishing. Make sure to be as detailed as possible in your journals, that will get you the highest grade. Lectures can also be a little tiring. Her opinions are the only ones that count. Not a bad class though.

Awful. yes she is passionate but assumes all others are or expects them to be at the same level as her. She is rude and will never give an A. If your opinion doesnt support hers just admit your wrong because it will either be belittled or pushed aside.Dont take her class! I participated like missed 1 day, got a C+.Stupid Woman its 240 not 400 level

She talks too much. So much that she can't hear or read what is in front of her without her own arbitrary thoughts getting in the way of a paper that is not addressing the same subject that is on her mind. Jesh.

Professor Courtney is very passionate about film and takes a great interest in her students and their progress. However, student participation is very important to her and she requires office visits, which seemed to turn a few people off. She does tend to ramble some. I really enjoyed her class and recommend it to anyone willing to put in work.

This class was really great. The films we watched and the way we discussed and analyzed them was so indepth and wonderful. The only real problem I had with the class was that it had a lot of unintelligent people who didn't want to contribute. It was still a great class. I learned a lot about analyizing films and forming my own theories.

I was really excited about this class and it'd be fairly easy. I was wrong. You watch some decent enough films, but you over-analyze the hell out of them. I also put more work into this class than any other. You take alot of notes and write a lot of papers. Courtney hates it if you disagree with her, she talks SO FAST, and she grades unfairly.

When I first started in this class, I hated it. She made the class seem extremely challenging and unreasonable. However, I started enjoying it more after I realized that I had a good grade in there and I really did learn a lot. I actually declared Film Studies as my minor as a result from this class. I would reccomend it to anyone who's interested.

When I first had this class I hated it because all the teacher did was lecture. But I liked her because I really got something useful out of it and she really is not in the business of failing students. I got a B+, but I should have failed.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS CLASS! She is an AWESOME professor who will push you to be the best writer & analytical thinker possible. At first, it's hard, but she helps you along the way. The class was worth the time & energy I devoted to it. If you're just looking for an easy ride, get out of college! If you're up to a challenge, you'll be rewarded!

Dr. Courtney rocks! She singlehandedly sparked my interest in cultural studies, a field that has changed my life. Non film majors could potential learn a lot from her, but come to the class with an open mind and a desire to work hard and learn. For Film Studies majors, she is a must!

Comment:
probably should be teaching woman's studies instead of film, an okay person, ranting style lecturer, does not like close reading interpretation- prefers post-modern cultural criticism, most will take her because they want to watch "movies" and get a grade, so its not like this matters
